Football League World’s Nottingham Forest fan pundit Grant Brindley has suggested teenage midfielder Brennan Johnson “has looked a really good prospect” this season.

The 18-year-old was given his debut in Sabri Lamouchi’s first game in charge, the opening weekend Championship defeat to West Bromwich Albion, and has appeared twice in the Carabao Cup since.

Such have been the quality of his performances that he has earned himself a call-up to the Wales under-21 squad for their UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifiers this weekend.

Brindley was full of praise for the midfielder and indicated that he had been impressive in the few opportunities given to him, particularly in Forest’s 3-0 East Midlands derby win against Derby County.

He said: “He has looked a really good prospect in the limited time he has played so far.

“He was really impressive in the Derby win, especially for our second goal where he showed the experience of a seasoned professional to pin back their defender to allow Albert Adomah get his cross in for Joe Lolley to head home.”

The Reds added four new central midfielders this summer, which could mean first-team opportunities are hard to come by for Johnson.

However, Brindley suggested he would like to see him get some more minutes.

He said: “I would definitely like to see more of him as the season goes on, however, it could be a struggle as we have so many midfielders.

“But the manager seems to rate him and has spoken about him a lot in interviews, so I think he will have a part to play.

“If he doesn’t, a loan move in January might be beneficial but I hope he can stay and contribute with us.”

Due to the international break, Forest’s next game is not until Saturday 14th of September when they face top-of-the-table Swansea City.

Johnson may be hoping he can force himself into Lamouchi's plans for that game with strong performances for Wales under-21s over the break.
