In the summer, and whilst he was still at the club, Dean Smith went about his transfer dealings in his and Brentford's usual shrewd style.

The Bees have a real habit of losing top players but simply bringing in another one with impressive ease meaning they are rarely caught short in terms of personnel.

Unfortunately, this summer was to be no different and the big loss came in the form of centre-back John Egan's move to Sheffield United.

Egan had been a key member of Smith's squad since arriving from Gillingham in 2016 on a free transfer.

The £4million fee received for him from the Blades eased the pain somewhat and reimbursed the Blades for the money already spent on a ready-made replacement.

This is FLW Rewind where we take a look back at a big decision made by a club, analyse the initial reaction and document what happened next.

The decision in question this time is Charlton Athletic youngster Ezri Konsa.

The Addicks have garnered a reputation for bringing through exciting youth players with the likes of Joe Gomez and Ademola Lookman just a couple who they have produced in recent years.

But even with this reputation in mind, some of the Griffin Park were not convinced by Konsa's £2.5million arrival, although some were still delighted:

With 14 games now played in the Championship season, it is safe to say that those who were delighted had every right to be.

Konsa has been a revelation at the back.

A terrific physical presence, capable of tussling with the biggest of Championship beasts and an extremely cool and composed with the ball at his feet.

He has played every minute of 12 of those 13 matches for the Bees and looks like another who will soon be on his way out of the North London club. Although the Premier League will most likely be his next destination.

For the time being anyway, Brentford have one hell of a player on their hands.
