Peterborough United are one of the clubs interested in a move for George Edmundson, according to reports from The Daily Record.

The Rangers defender is facing an uncertain future at Ibrox after falling out of favour under Steven Gerrard earlier in the season, leading him to be shipped out on loan to Derby County during the January transfer window.

The Posh have just secured promotion to the Championship and consider the 23-year-old as an ideal addition to bolster their defensive ranks, but would he be a good signing?

The team at FLW have their say...

This would be a statement signing from Peterborough this summer if they were able to secure a move for George Edmundson. The defender is someone that showed some encouraging form for Derby County during his loan spell with the Rams last term and proved he is a quality defender at Championship level.

Rangers might want to keep hold of him this summer following his form at Debry, but the 23-year-old is going to want to get regular game time next term and not be sitting around on the bench at Ibrox. That is where Peterborough could come in and take advantage.

Edmundson is someone that you feel with a regular run of game time will show his quality and his valuation might well rise dramatically with a strong full campaign in the Championship under his belt. That makes him fit in well with Peterborough’s model of bringing in players, developing them and then selling them on for a large profit.

It would be a very good addition for them to make to the squad because he would instantly improve the quality of their defensive options and in the long-term might prove to be a signing they can make a profit from.

I do think that this could be a decent signing for Peterborough if they can get it done.

Looking at their current options, it does seem as though the Posh are slightly short on options in the centre of their defence, and they will need to make sure they are solid at the back if they are to compete in the Championship next season.

Edmondson's experience at that level with Derby last season, and the fact that his recruitment by a club the size of Rangers highlights the potential that he possesses, means he could be a useful candidate to help fill that role for Peterborough.

Add in the fact that that apparent interest from Derby, and the fact Rangers may now be keen to keep the 23-year-old at Ibrox, and it does seem as though it would be a show of intent and strength from Peterborough were they to get it done.

As a result, given the lift that that could give the club heading into the new campaign, it does seem as though this could be one worth looking into further for those in charge at London Road.

I think it would be a very positive move for Posh if they bring him in this summer. He is more than good enough to play in the Championship and fits the profile for what Darren Ferguson is looking for. I have always admired the way they carry themselves in the transfer market and this would be another shrewd addition. It’s certainly one they need and I think he’ll only go on to improve at London Road. His future at Rangers seems uncertain too, so I think it would be worth a punt.
