Phil Jones' career has slowed down a lot in the last few years falling out of the Manchester United first team picture completely.

The former England international has only played two league games since May 2019 in failing to prove his worth to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

One of Derby County's strongest areas of the pitch has been centre back this season however Jones could learn from the likes of Phil Jagielka and Curtis Davies in looking to get his career back on track. The former Blackburn Rovers man's deal at Old Trafford runs out at the end of next season.

FLW writer Adam Jones gave his thoughts on the potential move speaking on the EFL Transfer Zone on FLW TV.

He said: "He's (Phil Jones) got a point to prove. He also needs to regain his mojo and his sharpness at the same time. It would be a very good fit for him, in terms of Derby County it depends on wages and a loan fee. If they dodge both of them then why not?

"Their first priority has to be a striker to support Sam Baldock and Colin Kazim-Richards. Phil Jones is only 29, remarkably, so he could be a good fit, I think it would be mutually beneficial but it will depend on the finances."

Jones had made three appearances for United's U23 side this season and despite having plenty of time left on his contract looks to be completely frozen out. Wayne Rooney will be aware of his situation and should have a pre-existing relationship to tap into in hoping to get the best out of the 27-time England international who recently turned down a testimonial with the Red Devils.
