Dwight Gayle has been discussed as a potential January target for Sheffield Wednesday by Yorkshire Live reporter Dom Howson.

After being heavily linked with a move to Hillsborough last January, Howson has said that it'll be interesting to see if he emerges as a target this time around.

Tony Pulis is thought to be targeting attacking reinforcements, so could the Owls revisit their interest in their former target?

It would be a good move for Wednesday, you’ve got to say.

Gayle in the Championship is about as proven as they come. You know he’s going to score goals and that would be huge for Wednesday.

Tony Pulis has inherited a squad with good attacking options, but they do lack that clinical No.9 that can score for them around a one-in-two ratio.

Not a cheap deal to do, but one that would be very important to Wednesday as they look to avoid relegation.

You know what you’re going to get and it wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world for Wednesday to revisit this target.

There is no denying this would be a fantastic signing.

However, I just cannot envisage this one happening.

Gayle has been struggling with a knee injury all summer but now looks to be back in contention at St James' Park and in truth, i'd be surprised if Steve Bruce decided to loan him out as he offers a different option for the Magpies up-top.

We know just how good Gayle can be in the Championship, you only have to look at his last stint in the second tier for West Brom, so he'd be ideal for Wednesday as they are in need of a potent source of goals up-front.

Gayle is likely to command substantial wages here which is likely to be a big stumbling block for Wednesday.

Look, if the Owls can make it happen then it's the perfect signing, but it's going to be a tricky one to pull off.

This would be a phenomenal signing for the Owls but I'd question whether they can get the deal done.

The 30-year-old's quality at this level is beyond doubt and the fact he has scored 46 goals in his last two seasons in the division illustrates what a lethal marksman he is in the Championship.

He's expected back from injury in December but Callum Wilson's strong start to the season would indicate he may be short of game time at Newcastle.

Even so, I really can't see this one happening. Will he really leave a Premier League club to join a Championship side in a relegation scrap? I don't think so.

Financial issues are likely to be a road block as well.
