Brentford forward Ollie Watkins is proving to be one the shrewdest signings in the English Football League this season.

Dean Smith signed the striker from League Two side Exeter City for a relatively modest fee of just £1.8m, a small fee in today's transfer climate.

The Bees attacker is excelling in the second tier this season, and he's made the jump from League Two to the Championship look scarily easy.

At the age of just 21, you get the impression that Watkins is set for big things, and he'll undoubtedly be catching the attention of Premier League sides.

Which top-flight clubs should be looking at Watkins?

The writers here at FLW take a look....

Chris Gallagher

What a find this guy has been!

Already Brentford will be worried about losing him and he looks capable of playing at a higher level.

A perfect signing for West Ham, they would benefit from his creativity and Everton are another big club who could do with the injection of pace and trickery that their frontline is desperately lacking.

Game time might not be guaranteed at either of those clubs, but he'd be sure to get a look in if he moved across London to Crystal Palace who are toothless going forward.

Adam Simeoni

Who shouldn't target him?!

The Brentford man has been sensational since making the step up from League Two in the summer, and already looks to be too good for this level.

Outside of the top six any Premier League club would significantly improve their squad by bringing Watkins into the mix, so there could be a real battle for his signature in the next year to 18 months.

There is no way Brentford will sell in January unless they receive a monster bid, but clubs will be eyeing the player up for sure.

Alfie Burns

Watkins showed at Exeter City last season what a talent he is, and he looks more than capable of scoring goals at a higher level with Brentford.

Newcastle need him. The young striker would suit Rafa Benitez' team, who still seem short of striking options after a poor summer transfer window, but others will be taking note of 21-year-old’s talent.

Watkins’ time at Brentford could be short if he continues to progress, with plenty of Premier League clubs sure to be on the lookout in the Championship.

George Dagless

A whole host of top clubs could sign him.

Watkins has started well for Brentford and his sharp rise up the leagues might continue at this pace with a top flight side.

Given where he's from, and the type of playing style and environment he works well in, I'd imagine Bournemouth would be a great fit for him.
