For Blackburn Rovers, this summer transfer window could be as big for them as any other club in the country, given what is at stake in terms of both outgoings and incomings.

Following a promising first season back in the Championship, there is a belief around the club that Rovers can now push on and compete for a return to the Premier League in the coming years, but only if they can get this window right.

The challenge facing those in charge at Rovers is two-fold. They must keep the key men that will prove vital to any promotion push - such as Bradley Dack and Darragh Lenihan - at the club, while simultaneously bringing the players to complement those key men, in order to form a side that is ready for the Premier League in every area of the pitch.

At the minute however, it appears as though there is something else that is currently leading the way in terms of transfer business at Ewood Park.

According to The Lancashire Telegraph, Rovers are currently looking at a move for 21-year-old Joe Malkin, who is currently plying his trade in the seventh tier of English football with Nantwich Town.

Having scored 11 goals in an impressive 2018/19, Malkin is apparently an option for Rovers' Under 23 side, who are short of attacking options following the graduation of Joe Nuttall to the senior side.

But while this is an important thing for Rovers to have in place in terms of bringing through options for the future - and indeed a big opportunity for Malkin himself - it feels as though the club should first be focusing on the present.

As has already been mentioned, Rovers have the opportunity to build on their promising first season back in the Championship, but only if they move quickly in the market.

If they do not, then the club may find themselves scrambling around at the end of the window looking to bring in any option available, rather than bringing in players that could be the difference between a mid table finish and a spot in the play-offs and beyond.

If that does happen, then the likes of Dack and Lenihan, who could be set for offers elsewhere, may well start to feel that pursuing one of those offers will be a better option than staying at a club who are struggling to bring in the players to match its potential.

Given the importance of those players to the side as it is, losing them without bringing in alternatives could well see Rovers quickly looking down rather than up again.

Once Rovers have brought in those names ready to take the closer to the top flight, there is no reason why they can't focus on bringing in players such as Malkin for the future. Regardless of what the likes of Malkin can do, if Rovers do not get the present right, then the future may not be bright at Ewood Park at all.
