West Bromwich Albion appear to be enjoying life under James Shan, with the caretaker boss steadying the ship after replacing Darren Moore at the Hawthorns.

Moore’s departure came as a shock to some due to the Baggies’ lofty position in the Championship table, but results under Shan have been impressive, with back-to-back wins and clean sheets coming.

And one man who appears to be benefitting for the temporary regime is Conor Townsend, who had endured a tough start to life at the Hawthorns under Moore.

You’ve got to note how Townsend has been competing with Kieran Gibbs for the left-back role this season, so to see his opportunities limited under Moore was no surprise.

However, when Gibbs was absent, Moore opted for Tosin Adarabioyo ahead of him, which had disastrous consequences against Leeds earlier this month. Townsend was drafted in for the manager’s final game in-charge against Ipswich, but since he’s departed, Townsend hasn’t looked back.

The 26-year-old has stated to the Express and Star how well things have been going under Shan, so to learn that Albion are considering giving the 40-year-old until the end of the season will delight him.

Under Shan there are no square pegs in round holes, which has offered Townsend a chance to finally impress over a run of games in the absence of Gibbs.

Of course, Gibbs' eventual return will probably mean that Townsend drops back onto the bench, such is the quality of his teammate. However, he can take confidence from the faith Shan has in him at the minute and the appreciation of the balance he brings down the left.

The managerial decisions at Albion in recent weeks might have raised some eyebrows, but Townsend will be confident he can continue to thrive if Shan remains in control until May.
