Middlesbrough are reportedly in talks with goalkeeper Aynsley Pears over a potential new contract at the Riverside according to the Daily Mail.

Pears has been hugely impressive in his breakthrough season with Boro, and has made 17 appearances in total for Jonathan Woodgate’s side this term.

Middlesbrough have recently sold Darren Randolph to Premier League side West Ham United, and Pears is likely to be the player that the Boro boss will call upon to fill the void left by the Irishman for the remainder of this year’s campaign.

Football League World’s Middlesbrough fan pundit Phil Wrightson issued his thoughts on Boro’s rumoured interest in tying Pears down to a new contract at the Riverside.

“We need to be tying down our young players given or lack if money and we have already given Spence, Coulson, Tavernier and Liddle new contracts.

“Pears is another player we need to keep hold of. He has proved to be very capable since Randolph left although but it would be a mistake to say he is at the level yet of the international keeper we lost.”

The regular punter went on to admit that he can see Pears being the ideal long-term solution for Middlesbrough, and outlined his attributes that he brings to the Boro side.

“He has looked a good shot-stopper and although he needs to work on his physical presence in the air I have seen enough to suggest that that will come with time.

“Unlike Jason Steele and Connor Ripley who, when given a go in goal never convinced they could be the long term replacement that we had needed since Mark Schwarzer, Pears does look like he could step up to be a long-term solution. A new contract is therefore a must.”

Pears and his Middlesbrough team-mates are next in action on Saturday when they take on promotion-chasing Brentford at Griffin Park, in what is certain to be a tricky test for Jonathan Woodgate’s side.
