Wigan Athletic could be set to lose Nick Powell in the summer for free if he does not sign a new deal.

Talks with the attacker have been ongoing for the past 12 months, according to executive chairman Darren Royle.

But there is yet to be a positive conclusion with Wigan Today reporting the 24-year-old is expected to consider his options before agreeing to any sort of deal.

Powell has not been as productive in front of goal since the turn of the year, and that has contributed to the Latics sitting three points above the relegation zone.

The former Manchester United player has six goals and six assists this season and scored his second goal since September last weekend in the 5-2 win over fellow strugglers Bolton Wanderers.

With time running out to pen a new contract, and Powell set to consider his options – we asked our team of FLW writers a question: can they see the attacker signing a new deal with Wigan?

Here’s what they had to say when asked for a response…

Gary Hutchinson

"I can't see Wigan keeping him.

"He's not had a great second half of the season, but he's a good player.

"A big PL move might not materialise, but if the likes of Villa or Derby stay down, they'll surely be interested.

"Sad for Wigan, but that's football."

Jay Taylor

“I am with Gary on this one; I can’t see him being at Wigan when the first ball is kicked next season.

“I think he would be a top target for one of the teams at the top end of the Championship.

“Let’s face it; there will be no shortage of offers for the former Red Devil having been impressive since at Wigan.

“A new challenge awaits.”

Louie Chandler

"It's hard to tell.

"He could obviously move to a better club in the summer and be fighting for promotion at the same time.

"But he also seems perfectly happy and settled in Wigan, so it would not be a big surprise to see him stick around either."
