Middlesbrough are reportedly hoping to sign QPR goalkeeper Joe Lumley, who could be out of contract this summer.

Lumley's current deal is set to expire in the summer but it's understood he remains in talks over a new deal.

Football Insider has reported that Boro are keen to sign the 26-year-old on a free transfer if he doesn't stay in west London.

But would he be a good signing for Boro? And do they need him?

We quizzed our FLW writers for their thoughts...

A much-needed signing, I’d say.

Boro obviously need to be in the market for a new goalkeeper with Marcus Bettinelli set to return to Fulham after an impressive loan spell.

There has been talk about Lee Burge from Sunderland, but for me, Joe Lumley is a goalkeeper who has a point to prove after falling down the pecking order at QPR.

He’s struggled for regular game time, so he could be slightly rusty if he made the move to Middlesbrough, but he needs a fresh start in my opinion.

On a free transfer, it could prove to be shrewd business.

Phil Spencer

I think that this could be a shrewd move for Middlesbrough.

Neil Warnock is certainly going to be looking for at least one goalkeeper this summer with Marcus Bettinelli heading back to Fulham following his loan spell.

Jordan Archer is out of contract, while Dejan Stojanovic faces an uphill battle to be involved after being loaned out.

In Lumley, there's a player who can hit the ground running.

The fact that he's available on a free transfer will be a big boost, but as well as that he knows the Championship well after his time with QPR and so this could certainly make sense.

Given that Grant Hall is already at the club it also means that Lumley will have a familiar face around to make any transition that bit easier.

Sam Rourke

Boro need a new goalkeeper this summer, and Lumley represents a shrewd option.

With Bettinelli returning to Fulham in the summer, signing a new goalkeeper needs to be a top priority and to get someone who has the experience that Lumley has on a free transfer is a good move.

Lumley's found it hard to break into the R's team this season such has been the fantastic form of number one Seny Dieng, so it's no surprise to see him seek pastures new ahead of next season.

When called upon in the latter end of this campaign, Lumley put in a strong of impressive performances, a notably standout one at the Riverside, which has perhaps caught Warnock's eye with him becoming a free agent.
