Garry Monk has inherited a quality squad at Middlesbrough, which will undoubtedly challenge for promotion in the Sky Bet Championship next season.

However, there are a few areas Monk will have to strengthen, particularly in attack – where Boro struggled throughout the 2016/17 campaign – and in the goalkeeping department.

Brad Guzan and Victor Valdes have both left the Riverside Stadium, leaving Monk desperately short of goalkeeping options, and whilst Boro are likely to hand Dimi Konstantopoulos a new deal, they will be on the lookout for another stopper.

One man who has been linked with a move to the Riverside Stadium this summer is Leeds United’s Rob Green, with Boro monitoring his situation at Elland Road.

Green is a man Monk knows well, after the pair worked together in Leeds last season, and the former England goalkeeper could be the perfect man to solve the problem position at the Riverside Stadium.

Despite Green - valued at £425k on Transfermarkt coming to the twilight of his career, the 37-year old showed in the Championship last season just how much he still has to offer at this level, putting in some fine displays for the Whites, as they went in search of promotion.

The goalkeeper played in every Championship fixture under Monk last season, and was one of the main factors behind Leeds remaining in the hunt for the play-offs throughout the season, with his form in the run-in exceptional.

It remains to be seen whether Leeds are willing to let Green leave Elland Road this summer, but there is little doubt that he would be an exceptional signing for Monk and Middlesbrough, as his experience could be key next season.

Boro will expect a fight for promotion regardless of whether they sign Green, but bringing the former England international to the north-east would significantly boost their chances of a Premier League return.
