Football League World's Bristol City fan pundit Ian Gay has commented on the performance of Marley Watkins in the club's weekend victory over Cardiff City in the Severnside Derby, with the Robins running out 1-0 winners thanks to Josh Brownhill's strike.

Watkins has been used sparingly by Lee Johnson this season, with the 29-year-old having turned out for the Robins on just three occasions this season, however he was given his chance to shine this weekend by his manager, due to Famara Diedhiou's suspension.

We caught up with our Bristol City fan pundit, and here's what Gay had to say about the frontman's performance against the Bluebirds this weekend:

"Watkins is a more physical presence and you have to win that battle with Cardiff.

"It was unsurprising move from Johnson, as our only other forward options were Rodri who is a smaller, fox in the box type striker and Antoine Semenyo, who lacks any real experience."

Gay then gave his thoughts on whether the striker will start in the club's next game:

"I think Diedhiou may return in our next home game v Forest and I expect Watkins will be used as a sub to offer us some physical presence.

"He can also play right wing, but despite having four wingers to choose from, we rarely start with them.

"However, his experience, competitive nature and strength plus the occasional goal to boot make him a good option in some games."

It is fair to say that Watkins isn't everyone's first choice at Ashton Gate, however it is clear that he offers something different to the Robins attack, which means he could be of some use to Johnson in games in which they are finding the opposition to be a tough nut to crack.
