Aiden O'Brien is a Shrewsbury Town player after signing a two-year deal at the League One club.

The forward was out of contract at Portsmouth this summer but despite Danny Cowley indicating he wanted him to stay and the South Coast club making an offer, the 28-year-old opted to join up with a division rival instead of extending his stay at Fratton Park.

O'Brien signed for Pompey from Sunderland on a free transfer in January and his five goals and one assist in 17 appearances don't reflect just how impressive he was under Cowley.

It's been a fairly slow start to the summer window at Fratton Park, with Marlon Pack and Zak Swanson the only new arrivals, and Portsmouth fan pundit Tom Chappell has revealed missing out on the attacker was a difficult one to take.

"It's a bit of a kick in the teeth," he explained. "In fact, it's a massive kick in the teeth.

"It's really upsetting, I'm gutted. I think we were a little bit slow on the moving heaven and earth kind of thing that we were hoping to go for in terms of getting him to re-sign.

"He won a lot of matches for Pompey to last season – the Gillingham game where he ran the length of the pitch to score, he scored the winner against Wigan Athletic when we turned around a two-goal deficit. We've got some really happy memories with him.

"It worries me that Shrewsbury managed to put in more of an inviting offer to him. Maybe not stumping up exactly what he was on when he was in a kind of shared salary with ourselves and Sunderland but I reckon Shrewsbury went that one better than us to get his signature.

"Gutted on Aiden O'Brien."
