John Marquis was outstanding for Doncaster Rovers last season and the striker has attracted interest from a host of rival clubs this summer.

The 27-year-old scored 26 goals in 54 appearances for Doncaster in all competitions, as Grant McCann's side reached the League One play-off semi-finals.

The Northern Echo are reporting that Sunderland, Millwall and Queens Park Rangers are all keen on signing the striker this summer, with the latter thought to be lining up a bid for his services.

Marquis has one year remaining on his contract at the Keepmoat Stadium and McCann has said that it will take a significant amount of money for the striker to leave the club this summer.

However, with so many clubs interested, it could be difficult for Doncaster to keep hold of their key player.

Today, FLW writer George Brooks discusses Marquis' situation...

If Marquis is to leave Doncaster this summer, which club would be the best option for him?

“Marquis has plenty of options available to him if he does decide to leave Doncaster this summer.

“I personally think Sunderland would be the best option for him, but he may feel that he is ready for another chance in the Championship.

“QPR would also be a good move for him, but he may favour a move to Millwall and will probably feel that he has a point to prove for the Lions.

“He may even want to remain at Doncaster and help the club try to win promotion next season. He's been an important player for them over the past few seasons and may feel that his story at the club is not finished yet.”

What chance to do Doncaster have of keeping hold of Marquis?

“Grant McCann has stated that it will take a significant amount of money for Marquis to leave Doncaster this summer.

“Marquis has one year remaining on his contract at the Keepmoat Stadium and if he does want to leave Doncaster, the club may want to cash in on him now, rather than risk losing him on a free transfer next summer.

“It would be a massive blow for Doncaster to lose him, but at least they would be a getting a significant amount of money for the striker.

“It would be almost disastrous if they ended up losing a player of his quality on a free transfer next summer.”

How much of a blow would it be for Doncaster to lose Marquis?

“Marquis was magnificent for Doncaster last season and without his goals, Grant McCann's side may not have reached the play-offs.

“McCann has described Marquis as the best striker in League One and he will be desperate to keep hold of him this summer, although that could prove to be easier said than done, with so many clubs interested in his services.

“Losing Marquis would be a massive blow for Doncaster and it would be very difficult for them to find a good replacement for him.”

Would Marquis be a good signing for Millwall?

“Marquis would be a fantastic signing for Millwall and an ideal replacement for Lee Gregory or Steve Morison, who both look set to leave the club this summer.

“The striker struggled to make an impact during his first spell at the club and was sent out on loan on several different occasions.

“He's a much better player now though and will be full of confidence after another hugely impressive season with Doncaster.

“He may feel that he is finally ready to make the step up to the Championship and he will probably feel that he has a point to prove to Millwall, after his first spell with the club.”

Would Marquis be a good signing for Sunderland?

“This would be a magnificent signing for Sunderland.

“Marquis has become one of the most prolific strikers in League One and could score the goals to fire the Black Cats to promotion next season.

“Sunderland wanted to sign him in January as a replacement for Josh Maja and if they'd have signed him instead of Will Grigg, perhaps they'd have gone up automatically.

“Marquis was disappointed that his move to the Stadium of Light wasn't allowed to happen, so perhaps he will want to move there this summer and he'd be a great signing for Sunderland.”

Would Marquis be a good signing for QPR?

“QPR could do with some more firepower up front and Marquis could be able to provide that.

“Even though his first spell in the Championship with Millwall didn’t work out, he’s a far better player now.

“He was excellent for Doncaster in League One last season and will feel that he deserves another chance in the Championship.

“The striker will be full of confidence after last season and should be able to make an impact for the Hoops.

“They will face competition to sign him though, so it will be interesting to see where he ends up.”
