For many fans it has been an utterly unbearable season, which of course means that it has also been a thoroughly entertaining one.

Races for automatic promotion and the play-offs have gone right until the end whilst the relegation scrap continues to ensue.

Out of all of this drama, a whole host of brilliant performers have emerged. The likes of Teemu Pukki, Billy Sharp, Che Adams, Jack Grealish, Tammy Abraham, Pablo Hernandez, Dwight Gayle and Harry Wilson have all lit up the second-tier with their attacking talents throughout the season.

However, one name caught the eye of former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan more than others as he told Football Insider that Harvey Barnes came third in his list for player of the season.

The exciting winger was exceptional for the Baggies during the first half of the season but was recalled from his loan spell by Leicester in January.

So, what should we make of Whelan's slightly left-field shout?

We discuss...

Louie Chandler

"I know that ultimately it doesn't matter but it really is a ludicrous suggestion.

"There have been a lot of brilliant players in the Championship so to suggest that only two had been better than someone who stayed in the league for half a season is ridiculous.

"Barnes was clearly an exceptional player at this level but he would not be in my top ten let alone top three."

George Harbey

"It’s hard to say really.

"Barnes had an amazing first half of the campaign, and thoroughly deserved to be recalled by Leicester City after such an impressive spell with West Brom.

"But so many players have been consistent all season and have stepped up to the plate when it mattered, and I think there are more than three players that have been better than him this season."

Toby Wilding

"Had he been here for the whole season, then he would surely be in the running.

"He hasn't however, and it is hard to believe that there are only two players who have made a bigger contribution over the course of a whole season than Barnes made during half a season at The Hawthorns, with the likes of Jack Grealish; Jarrod Bowen and even EFL Player of the Year Teemu Pukki missing out in Whelan's rankings."
