Leon Clarke has had the definition of a roller-coaster season for Sheffield United and there's still time for one more hefty incline or a big dip.

The Blades, as a whole, have had a campaign on the up. Certainly, when you consider how they started this season you could argue that since about Christmas time things have slightly regressed but when you remember they were in League One last season, this campaign can be considered nothing but a success.

Part of that, too, in the first half at least was Clarke discovering the Midas touch as he raced into the position of top scorer and equalled records not seen in this country since Luis Suarez was in the Premier League.

Since the turn of the year, though, he's dropped well out of form. Of course, all players go through it and he has had injury problems but the sheer drop in his stats across the board continues to cast an air of mystery over the powerful forward.

Many could not work out how Chris Wilder had suddenly turned a make-no-mistake decent striker into an absolute goal-scoring machine and it seems just as confusing as to how he's struggled in 2018.

Clarke's career has always been up and down, though, and so perhaps Blades fans and neutrals alike should just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Certainly, you wouldn't put it past him scoring and going on a late run to fire the Blades up once he returns from injury because, weirdly enough, it would almost make sense for a man who has stumped plenty this season.
