Ian Harte has thrown his backing behind Patrick Bamford, saying that he's had 'a really, really good season'.

The Leeds United striker is the club's top goalscorer after scoring 13 goals in 36 appearances so far in the Championship.

Those strikes have gone a long way in helping the Whites to their current spot at the top of the league, with Leeds now favourites to go on and secure a historic return to the Premier League.

Bamford has also been the target of criticism from those at Elland Road with some quarters of the fanbase saying that he wastes too many chances for a player in his position.

Others have backed Tyler Roberts to replace the number nine in Marcelo Bielsa's line-up, however, according to the former full-back, the job that Bamford does for Leeds United should not be underestimated.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Harte said: “Patrick Bamford has been really, really good this season.

“I know he gets criticised for not getting enough goals but what he does for the team – he chases down lost causes, he’s a nuisance and I think that he’s been a key part to where they are this season.”

On the possibility of Tyler Roberts stepping into Bamford's shoes, he added: "I don’t think that anyone could replace Patrick Bamford, they’re two completely different players.

“Roberts drops deep into the pockets and causes problems from there.

“I know that Bamford has been getting criticised from the Leeds fans because he’s missed a few chances but fair play to him because he’s stuck with it and he’s getting his rewards with a few more goals.

“Hopefully he can continue to help Leeds get back to the Premier League.”
