A number of Derby County fans have been bemoaning the lack of predatory instincts from Martyn Waghorn following the Rams’ frustrating 1-0 defeat at Bristol City on Saturday.

Waghorn was named upfront by Wayne Rooney and the rest of the coaching staff as the Rams headed into their first game without Phillip Cocu. The forward has got off to a slow start to the campaign so managing to register just two league goals and one assist so far for the Rams in seven appearances (Sofascore).

Often against Bristol City, he was isolated and dropped deeper to try and get involved in the game which meant that at times he was not in and around the box when the Rams produced a few dangerous deliveries into the penalty area.

That highlights his lack of predatory instincts in and around the box, with the forward more of a supporting attacker than the main striker.

Waghorn’s struggles were also compounded by the fact that he lost possession 12 times throughout the game and he only had 30 touches of the ball (Sofascore). Despite this, the Rams are likely going to need to persist with him upfront until they can potentially bring in a new striker in January.

Many Derby fans were left frustrated with his lack of suitability to the lone forward role, while one supporter even questioned the forward’s value to the squad since he joined the club.
