Football League World's Middlesbrough fan pundit Phil Wrightson has revealed that he feels squad depth is a "huge worry" for the North East club ahead of a busy festive period.

Jonathan Woodgate's side picked up their first win since September against Barnsley last night, with Ashley Fletcher's composed 54th-minute finish proving the difference between the two sides.

That result provided Boro with a vital three points and means Woodgate's side are 20th in the Championship as things stand–two places and one point above the relegation places–ahead of a difficult run of fixtures and a busy festive period.

The North East club play three top-six sides, Leeds United, Nottingham Forest, and Swansea City, in their next four games and then face four matches in 11 days across Christmas and New Year.

Ahead of that run, Wrightson revealed he was very concerned about Boro's squad depth.

He said: "Squad depth is a huge worry in the respect that we don’t have any. We have injuries piling up already and are pulling more and more of the youth team into the fray.

"Daniel Ayala may be on his way in January which would be a huge blow and if we lose our defensive rock things may get a lot grimmer. Things could get worse before they get better."

Boro face arguably their toughest test of the season on Saturday as they travel to Elland Road to face a second-place Leeds side who are looking to make it five wins in five.

A loss in that game could see them slide back into the drop zone, should the sides below them win.
