Cardiff City are considering a move to for Middlesbrough striker Britt Assombalonga, Football Insider have reported.

Assombalonga moved to The Riverside Stadium from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2017 in a deal thought to be worth £15million, and has gone onto make 93 appearances and score 31 goals in all competitions for 'Boro.

Following relegation last season, Neil Warnock's side will be looking for a quick return to the Premier League in the coming campaign, and it appears that the Bluebirds have identified Assombalonga as a potential option to help them do that.

Cardiff are not the only side to have been linked with Assombalonga recently, with Bristol City and Scottish champions Celtic both also interested in a move for the 26-year-old Democratic Republic of Congo international.

There are still two years remaining on Assombalonga's current contract with Middlesbrough, so it may not be easy to prise him away from the Riverside Stadium.

But would Assombalonga be a good signing for Cardiff?

We put that question to some of our Football League World writers...

George Brooks

"This could be a great signing for Cardiff City.

"Cardiff will be expected to challenge for automatic promotion next season and if they are going to challenge, then they will need a top striker.

"Assombalonga is a fantastic player and he has finished as Middlesbrough's top scorer in each of the past two seasons.

"He has got all the attributes of a top-centre forward and has got plenty of experience in the Championship with both Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest.

"I think he is more than capable of making an impact for Cardiff next season and I see no reason why he cannot score 20 goals or more for one of the top teams in the league."

Kealan Hughes

“Assombalonga would be a terrific signing for Cardiff and would provide the goals they need to challenge for the automatic promotion places.

“He was largely restricted during his time at Boro due to the lack of creativity and willingness to go forward within the side.

“He is a proven goalscorer at Championship level and that is exactly what Cardiff lack from their current crop of strikers. Assombalonga would provide them with a focal point up top and a target in the area to get on the end of crosses.

“Warnock is brilliant at getting the best out of players and providing them with the faith and confidence they need to rediscover form, and if he can get Assombalonga back to his best then Cardiff will be difficult to stop this season.”

Gary Hutchinson

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; I think he’s a great signing for anyone in the Championship.

“I can’t understand why Boro seem so keen to offload him. Maybe it’s something behind the scenes, maybe there is an attitude problem.

“It can’t be his ability. He’s proven, consistently, that he’s one of the best strikers in the Championship. He’s got pace, he can score goals and he’s effective from the bench as well as the start.

“Mark my words; if he moves to a club that plays him through the centre he’ll score 15+ goals. Boro will lose out here.”
