Sheffield Wednesday defender, Matthew Penney, completed a loan move to German side, St Pauli, where he will link up with former manager Jos Luhukay for the 2019/20 season.

Football League World's Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit Thomas Fogg issued his thoughts on Penney's departure, and insisted that is the right move for both parties involved.

"Penney’s departure on loan is a great move for all and can only be seen as a positive, we have depth on the left hand side of the pitch and it is unlikely that he would have got many appearances this season."

Penney made 16 appearances for the Owls last season, but didn't make a single appearance in their league campaign under Lee Bullen this term.

Fogg revealed that some of the Hillsborough faithful would have preferred to see him loaned out to a League One or League Two club this summer.

"Some may have preferred him to gain experience in League One/Two but him and Jos Luhukay obviously have a good relationship and you’d expect him to feature often for St Pauli in a country where a lot of young English players have had success recently."

The Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit is keen to see Penney come back to the club and challenge for a first-team spot in Bullen's squad, although it'll be interesting to see where they are playing their football, with the Owls currently sat fourth in the Championship table.

"When he appeared in the first-team last season, he showed glimpses of his ability but he looked very raw and not quite ready to feature regularly in the Championship and hopefully in a years time he can come back and push on for the first-team."
