Sheffield Wednesday have managed to bolster their squad this summer by securing the services of a host of fresh faces.

Michael Ihiekwe, Tyreeq Bakinson, Akin Famewo, Ben Heneghan, Will Vaulks, Michael Smith and David Stockdale have all joined the Owls on a permanent basis ahead of the new campaign.

Reece James meanwhile has sealed a temporary switch to Wednesday from Championship side Blackpool.

Despite this influx of players, the Owls are seemingly still in the market for a new forward.

According to a Patreon report from journalist Alan Nixon, Wednesday are keen on signing Kemar Roofe on loan from Rangers.

The Owls could face competition from Derby County for Roofe's signature as their League One rivals have also been linked with a swoop this month.

During the previous campaign, Roofe managed to find the back of the net on 16 occasions for Rangers as his side reached the Europa League final and won the Scottish Cup.

Making reference to Wednesday's pursuit of Roofe, Carlton Palmer has insisted that a move would be a good fit for both parties.

Speaking to Football League World, Palmer said: "I think it would be a good fit for both parties, he's well down the pecking order at Rangers, didn't play a lot last season and picked up a few injuries and didn't play a lot.

"I believe Derby County are in for him as well along with a few other clubs but I think it would be a good fit for him.

"I think Darren [Moore] knows him personally, obviously from the Jamaican national team he knows him personally.

"I think it would be a good fit, I think Wednesday need that option.

"They have [Lee] Gregory, they have signed Smith and they have got [Josh] Windass who can play down the middle and they have got [Callum] Patterson but I still think they need that third striker who could possibly get them anywhere between 15 and 20 goals in a season."

The Verdict

If Wednesday are able to convince Roofe to join the club, this could indeed turn out to be a shrewd bit of business.

Whereas it may take the forward some time to adapt to life in League One due to the fact that he has never played at this level before, he has produced some encouraging performances at a higher level during his career.

In the 110 appearances that he has made in the Championship, Roofe has managed to provide 40 direct goal contributions.

The 29-year-old's arrival may also force the likes of Gregory, Smith and Patterson to step up their performance levels which in turn could have a positive impact on the club's fortunes in the third-tier.
