‘A gamble, but it’s worth taking’ – Aston Villa keen on ace, good signing? Opinion

Aston Villa are considering making a move for Bristol City defender Adam Webster, according to The Sun.

Dean Smith is eager to bolster his side’s defensive options ahead of their top-flight return, but Villa have so far not reached agreements to re-sign last season’s loanees Axel Tuanzebe and Tyrone Mings.

Webster marshalled the Robins’ back-line last season as Lee Johnson’s side narrowly missed out on a Championship play-off place, and his performances have now attracted the attention of Villa.

Villa’s chiefs are reportedly set to launch a £12million bid for the 24-year-old, despite seeing their interest rebuffed so far.

So, would Webster be a good addition for Villa? We discuss…

Chris Gallagher

“This would be a very good signing.

“We have seen many Championship players handle the step up to the Premier League in the past, with Harry Maguire the most obvious example.

“And, whilst Webster isn’t that level, he is a good defender and comfortable on the ball, so I think he will be able to cope in the top-flight with ease.

“Villa need more quality at the heart of their defence and Webster is someone who could do a great job for them for the long term.

Jacob Potter

“I think this would be a gamble, but it’s worth taking.

“Webster doesn’t have any experience of playing in the Premier League, which will surely come as a concern for Villa, especially when they need to add quality to their defence ahead of next season.

“But the Bristol City defender has been impressive for Lee Johnson’s side in recent months, and would be more than deserving of a move to the top-flight where he could prove to be a key player for Dean Smith’s side. He’d be an upgrade on what they currently have, although I think this could hint they aren’t going to be able to sign Tyrone Mings on a permanent deal.”

Ben Lang

“This is a surprising one, but I think it could prove to be an inspired move from Villa.

“Webster always looks strong defensively and he is also highly competent in possession, which means he could prove to be an excellent fit in the top-flight. He will have big shoes to fill from the likes of Tuanzebe and Mings, but his performances last season proved he is certainly capable of making the grade.

“However, it should be noted that the fact Villa are considering this move suggests their confidence in landing Tuanzebe and Mings is declining.”
