Swansea City are interested in signing defender Reece James on loan from Chelsea, according to the Daily Mail.

The 20-year-old was hugely impressive on loan at Wigan Athletic in the Championship last season and scored three goals in 45 league appearances as the Latics achieved survival.

Swansea recently appointed World Cup-winning England Under-17 coach Steve Cooper as their new manager and he is interested in making James his first signing for the Swans.

This latest report from the Daily Mail states that Swansea are likely to face competition for the player, with Premier League and Bundesliga clubs also keen to take him on loan.

Today, FLW writer George Brooks discusses this potential signing for Swansea...

How much of a good signing would this be for Swansea?

“This would be a fantastic signing for Swansea City. James is a very promising player and he was one of the standout players for Wigan in the Championship last season.

“He already has plenty of experience in the Championship and should be able to make an immediate impact for the Swans.

“Steve Cooper has the ability to get the best out of young talented players and if he can do the same with James, then he could be some signing for Swansea.”

Will Chelsea be prepared to let him go?

“I'm not sure whether Chelsea will be prepared to let James go, but if he isn't going to get a chance in the first-team at Stamford Bridge next season, then another loan move is the best thing for his development.

“He would really benefit from another season in the Championship and this would give him much more of a chance of making a big impact for Chelsea when he finally does get his opportunity.

“I'm just not sure whether Chelsea will want to let him leave, because of their expected transfer ban.

“It could well depend on who the next manager at Stamford Bridge is, with Maurizio Sarri having left to join Juventus.”

Would James be open to another loan move?

“Only James knows the answer to that question for sure, but I believe another loan move would be the best thing for his development.

“He will probably feel that he is good enough to play for Chelsea next season and that he deserves his chance, but that could depend on who the next manager at Stamford Bridge is.

“James has an important decision to make. He either goes out on loan again or stays put and tries to fight for his place in the Chelsea side.

“I'm not sure if he will get his chance in the first-team at Chelsea next season and he could certainly benefit from another loan move.

“He is more than capable of making an impact at a club like Swansea.”

Would Swansea be a good move for James?

“I think Swansea would be a good move for James on loan.

“James is good enough to go straight into their team and will be able to make an impact straight away, much like he did at Wigan Athletic last season.

“A manager like Steve Cooper should be able to get the best out of him and this could be key for his development.

“He may view it as a bit of a risk, but it could turn out to be the best decision he has made in terms of his career.”

If he does stay, can you see him getting a chance at Chelsea next season?

“I'm really not sure about this. I think it will most likely depend on who the next manager at Stamford Bridge is.

“If it's somebody like Frank Lampard, who is prepared to give young players a chance, then he may get an opportunity, but it puts an awful lot of pressure on him to perform.

“Chelsea have so many talented young players and those who were sent out on loan to the Championship last season will feel that they are just as worthy of a chance in the first-team as James is.

“The likes of Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori will all feel they deserve a chance and if Chelsea are going to give any of their young players an opportunity, I see it being one of those three rather than James.”

Would a move to the Bundesliga be a good option for James?

“We've seen the likes of Jadon Sancho and others do well in Germany and perhaps James would be tempted by a move to the Bundesliga.

“It would certainly be an exciting new challenge for him and you never know, he may be able to make an impact in the Bundesliga.

“If was him though I'd want to stay in England. It may take time for him to adjust to German football and he's already got plenty of experience in the Championship.

“I think another loan move to a Championship team would be the best thing for his development and give him the best chance of making it at Chelsea.”
