‘A difficult question to answer’ – Exclusive: Beckford makes Kalvin Phillips admission following Leeds commitment

Jermaine Beckford has admitted that Kalvin Philips is worth around the £25m mark in today’s market, in wake of Leeds United securing the midfielder’s service on a five-year deal.

Leeds confirmed that they had rebuffed offers in the excess of £20m for Phillips over the summer, before the 23-year-old put pen-to-paper on a new long-term deal at Elland Road.

Phillips’ new terms see him committed to Leeds until the summer of 2024, with the announcement a real shot in the arm for the promotion-chasing Whites.

In just over 12 months, Marcelo Bielsa has transformed Phillips into one of the Championship’s best holding midfielders, with his valuation a hot topic at this moment in time.

This week, Jermaine Beckford caught up with Football League World in an exclusive interview with Chief Editor, Sam Rourke, where the former Elland Road favourite weighed in with how much he rates Phillips.

“£80m,” Beckford joked, when quizzed on the value of Phillips.

“It’s a difficult question to answer. Financially, nowadays, the cost of players has absolutely spiralled. I think about £25m – that’s around the right sort of number.

“I’ll be honest, I wouldn’t be disappointed if I was quoted around that price. He’s well worth the money and he’s shown what he’s capable of.

“He’s only going to get better and I think it’s a great acquisition.”

Since making his debut as a fresh-faced midfielder in 2015, Phillips has gone on to make 149 senior appearances for the Whites, including the opening eight fixtures of the current campaign.

Phillips has helped Leeds to four wins, one draw and a single defeat in the Championship, whilst also playing a part in the League Cup ties with Salford and Stoke.

Leeds are next in action on Sunday, when they head to Oakwell to take on Barnsley.
