Premier League side Southampton are reportedly interested in signing Aston Villa loanee Tyrone Mings in the summer.

The 26-year-old has been a revelation ever since his loan switch to Villa Park from AFC Bournemouth, and has dramatically improved Villa's shaky defence.

The towering defender has been given a new lease of life under Dean Smith and has played an integral role in guiding the Villans into the play-off places - and it is believed that the club have an agreement with Bournemouth allowing them to match any rival offers for the defender in the summer.

But according to reports from the Mirror (17/03, page 72), Ralph Hasenhuttl's men are interested in poaching Mings from their local rivals when his spell at Villa ends at the end of the season.

Here, we discuss whether he would be a good signing for Southampton...

George Harbey

"What a coup this would be for Southampton.

"Mings has been incredible since he signed for Villa, and has offered some real strength and presence to the side.

"If he was given the chance, he'd probably want to stay at Villa, though this is ultimately up to Bournemouth..."

Jay Taylor

"This would be a class deal for Southampton.

"I see it as a decent Van Dijk replacement.

"He’s been solid for Villa and would improve any team he gets in - especially the Saints with their defensive frailties this season."

Louie Chandler

"This would be an excellent signing.

"Mings has proven that he has retained his abilities through a host of injury problems and is more than capable of playing in the Premier League.

"Whether Bournemouth would sell to them is a different matter, however."
