Celtic are believed to be interested in Middlesbrough’s Britt Assombalonga as Neil Lennon looks to add another striker to his squad.
The 26-year-old was Boro’s top scorer last season with 16 goals in all competitions, however they may look to move the DR Congo international on as they look to raise funds for new manager Jonathan Woodgate.
And, according to Football Insider, the former Nottingham Forest man is high up on Celtic’s wanted list, although it’s hard to imagine they will offer anywhere near the £15m Boro paid for him a few years ago.
Nevertheless, a deal could still be agreed and he would give the Glasgow giants another much-needed option in the final third ahead of what will be a busy campaign as they look to get into the Champions League.
But, would he be a good signing for the Hoops?
Here our writers take a look…
“I like the look of this deal from a Celtic point of view, the Hoops should be looking to add more goals to their squad this summer and Assombalonga is a great option.
“In two years at Middlesbrough, Assombalonga has consistently scored goals to drag them into play-off contention, and prior to his Riverside switch the striker was a hit at Nottingham Forest.
“A hefty transfer fee might put Celtic off, but Boro are more likely to be open to selling to someone who isn’t a direct rival in the Championship. That might knock a few million off, whilst also allowing Woodgate to get his own men in.
“All-round, this could work out, but there would be work to do.”
“This would be a decent signing at the right price but I can’t see it happening.
“Celtic already have two good forwards in Leigh Griffiths and Odsonne Edouard but they do need another to give them enough depth over the course of the season.
“However, I can’t see them paying the fee required to bring in Assombalonga and it’s hard to see how he would get ahead of the Frenchman either if everyone was fit.
“There’s no doubt that the Boro man would score goals for fun in Scotland but there would be serious question marks as to whether he could help the side progress in Europe and you’d have to say he wouldn’t make much difference.
“Therefore, for the fee that the Championship side will surely want this wouldn’t be a good signing from Neil Lennon.”
“I think that Assombalonga would be an excellent signing for Celtic – they need a player of his goalscoring ability up top, as they haven’t really had that 15+ goals man since losing Moussa Dembele.
“Assombalonga has had many critics since leaving Forest and signing for Boro, but with a ratio of almost a goal every two league starts, you can hardly argue that he is one of the best forwards in the Championship.
“It would be strange to see him leave for Celtic, given that Sheffield United were reportedly after him not too long ago, and he could definitely make the step-up to the English Premier League.
“But if he wants to win trophies and score goals for fun, then a move to Celtic Park would be a good move for him.”
