‘A deal should have been struck back in the summer’ – Sunderland’s mistakes this season assessed: Opinion

Sunderland are well in the race for a top two position in League One, but their season could have been much better.

The Black Cats have failed to capitalise on home support on many occasions, and have drawn far too many games – 14 in total to be exact.

On the road, they haven’t been much better either, and Luton and Barnsley seem more equipped for automatic promotion.

What has been their biggest mistake of the season?

We discuss…

Jacob Potter

“Overcomplacency will cost them the League One title.

“Sunderland came into League One as the favourites to win promotion this season, but will really struggle to lift the title in May.

“They’ve become too complacent in games, which has cost them points which could have been vital.”

Louie Chandler

“Not tying Maja down.

“Yes, Grigg will undoubtedly prove to be an adequate replacement but losing Maja for just £3million will have stung.

“A deal should have been struck back in the summer.”

Lewis Steele

“Not being able to turn draws into wins.

“This has been a problem throughout, with Sunderland drawing 14 of their games this season.

“It will cost them the League One title and maybe even automatic promotion altogether.”
