It's been a case of close but no cigar for Sheffield Wednesday over the last five years.

The Owls have been battling for promotion to the Premier League more often than not, but have simply fallen at the final hurdle every time.

But over the last five years, what has been THE lowest moment for Sheffield Wednesday?

We take a look....

Adam Simeoni

Take your pick from the play-off defeats.

Surely the playoff final loss to Hull City a couple of years ago stands out, because Wednesday really should have won that match.

They haven't come closer to securing a top flight return since falling out of the division all of those years ago, and that truly was a dark day for Owls fans.

George Dagless

The second play-off loss last season.

The final against Hull was a kick in the teeth for Wednesday but they were not expected to make it there.

Second time around, though, fans were confident they'd do it and instead they fell at the first hurdle against Huddersfield.

The Owls will hope it's third time lucky this season.

Chris Gallagher

The play-off final loss to Hull.

It was a great achievement to get to the final, but losing such an important game is tough to take.

To make matters worse, the Owls didn't play anywhere near their best on the day either.

One game would've changed their future significantly and who knows where they would be now had they won.

Alfie Burns

The club’s play-off final defeat to Hull City in 2016 stands out as a low point.

Carlos Carvalhal was on the verge of becoming a legend at Hillsborough, and with hindsight, the club’s failure to beat Hull at Wembley looks like a missed opportunity, with the Owls not coming any closer to a Premier League return since then.

The run to the play-off final was more than positive, but failure to overcome Hull made the Wembley outing a dark day.
