Sheffield Wednesday have been left in complete disarray in the build-up to the 2019/20 campaign following the departure of Steve Bruce.

The former Villa and Sunderland boss only took over at Hillsborough in February but has already resigned from his post to takeover from Rafa Benitez at Newcastle United.

Whilst that is a saga that is sure to rumble on for a while still, the Owls need to hunt out a new boss and on Thursday they were linked with a move for Barnsley's Daniel Stendel, according to the Daily Mirror's live blog (17/07, 19:58).

So, would this be a good appointment?

We discuss...

George Harbey

"I think that it would be a massive statement of intent from Wednesday if they were to go out and appoint Stendel.

"He has done a magnificent job at Barnsley so far, and has taken to life as a manager in English football like a duck to water.

"His sides play attractive football, so the likes of Barry Bannan and Adam Reach would both thrive in his attacking, fast-paced brand of football.

"Would he want to leave Barnsley at this moment in time? I can't see it. But, Wednesday are a big, big club, and they definitely have the pulling power."

Toby Wilding

"This is one that feels like it could go either way.

"Stendel took to English football perfectly last season, doing just what Barnsley wanted him to in getting them immediately promoted back to the Championship.

"However, given his success at Oakwell last year, Barnsley are not going to want to let Stendel go easily, and with the new season already just a matter of weeks away, you wonder whether Wednesday can afford to lose precious time that could be spent preparing for the new campaign involved in the process of bringing Stendel to Hillsborough.

"It is also worth considering that Stendel has never actually managed in the Championship before, so there may well be some concerns about his ability to cope with the challenges of this particular division, and you wonder whether Wednesday will want to be the ones to take that chance on him, especially when they have been linked with more experienced names at Championship level."

Kealan Hughes

"Stendel would be a good option for Wednesday, although he offers a complete change in strategy to Steve Bruce.

"The German got Barnsley playing great football last season and they were one of the best attacking teams throughout the season.

"With better players at The Owls he should be able to continue that philosohpy and get the fans on their feet, which means that even if he goes through a sticky patch he should remain popular.

"Stendel is also settled in South Yorkshire too so that would be an added benefit, as it would allow him to get started straight away and means he is more likely to stay long-term."
