Luton Town are finding life hard on their return to the Championship, with Graeme Jones' side down in 21st place with only seven points to show for their opening eight matches, ahead of the weekend trip to Blackburn Rovers.

Jones, 49, replaced caretaker manager Mick Harford in May 2019, after Harford had guided the Hatters to promotion to the Championship having replaced Nathan Jones when he moved to Stoke City in January 2019.

So is Jones under pressure at Luton after their poor start to the season?

We discuss........

Josh Cole

“Whilst Luton have experienced a tough start to the 2019/20 campaign, it may be a mistake if they do end up parting ways with Graeme Jones.

“Although the Hatters are not exactly firing on all cylinders in the Championship, they have managed to produce some real signs of promise during victories over Huddersfield Town and Barnsley.

“With survival being the club’s goal, this season following last year’s promotion for League One, it is clear that they need to improve upon their recent form over the coming months.

“Therefore, Jones will be hoping his side can deliver a response to their recent slump by achieving a positive result against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday."

"It doesn't seem to me as though there has been too much scrutiny on Jones at the minute, but I imagine that will change if results do not.

"Up until now Jones has probably benefited from having the benefit of the doubt, of still being in something of a bedding in period at Kenilworth Road, following his appointment in the summer.

"That however cannot last forever, and Luton will need to start picking up results quickly if they are to avoid being cut adrift at the bottom of the Championship, and with survival surely their main priority this season, that could soon become a concern for Jones.

"Indeed, with Mick Harford - who did well stepping into the managerial hot seat in the second half of last season still at the club - you could almost argue that Luton may have a ready-made replacement lingering over Jones if he is unable to produce the results, providing they could convince Harford to return to that role."

“I wouldn’t say he’s under too much pressure – everyone will have known what a tough season Luton were in for.

“Despite winning League One last season, they probably have one of the lowest budgets in the Championship this season, and staying up would be a massive achievement.

“Obviously losing so heavily at home is disappointing, but at times, they have shown signs of promise and they look like a really solid, united group.

“I think sacking Jones would be a mistake at this stage of the season – who would come in and replace him who is better?”
