Millwall manager Neil Harris is looking to improve his squad ahead of the new Championship campaign, having narrowly avoided relegation last season, with a loan move for Derby County goalkeeper Scott Carson a potential target for the Lions, according to the print edition of The Sun on Sunday (July 23, Page 63).

Carson, 33, has been at Pride Park since 2015 and has made 158 appearances in a four year spell having previously played for Leeds, Liverpool, West Brom, Bursaspor and Wigan Athletic and spent time on-loan at Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton and Aston Villa.

The experienced shot-stopper was ousted from the starting eleven last season, with Kelle Roos the preferred option by former Rams boss Frank Lampard.

So would the former England international prove a good loan signing for Millwall?

We discuss........

Josh Cole

"If Millwall do indeed to get a deal over the line for Carson, he could prove to be an inspired acquisition by Neil Harris.

"Although the Lions have already secured the services of Frank Fielding for next season, it could be argued that the 31-year-old could benefit from some added competition, given that he is the only senior shot-stopper that the club currently have on their books at the Den.

"Whereas there is no doubting that Carson is very much in the twilight of his career, his wealth of experience at Championship level may come in handy if Millwall are to better the 21 st place finish they managed to achieve last season, in 2020.

"Despite losing his place in Derby County’s starting XI towards the end of the previous campaign to Kelle Roos, Carson was still able to demonstrate enough quality throughout the year to suggest that he still has enough in his locker to compete in the second-tier and thus it would make sense for the Lions to pounce this summer."

Ned Holmes

“Yes, I think the 33-year-old could be a great addition to Neil Harris’ squad.

“The Lions have already added Frank Fielding this summer and I think it would make sense to bring in Carson as competition.

“Last season was not the Englishman’s finest, as he was ousted by Kelle Roos for the Derby number one shirt late in the season, but his performances for the Rams showed he still had a lot to offer.

“Fielding is the only keeper in the Millwall senior squad and has been prone to injuries while at Bristol City, so reinforcements are needed.

“Carson’s exploits in both the Championship and Premier League, having made a combined 405 appearances and kept 117 clean sheets, show he has quality and that signing him would improve Harris’ squad.”

George Brooks

"This would be a good signing for Millwall.

"Carson is a quality goalkeeper and was an important player for Derby during the first half of last season in the Championship, before he lost in place in the side to Kelle Roos.

"He's got an enormous amount of experience and he showed with his performances for the Rams last season that he is more than good enough to be a good goalkeeper at this level.

"With that said, I don't think he has a future at Derby under Phillip Cocu and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him leave the club this summer.

"I think Millwall would be a good move for him and Neil Harris could do with another goalkeeper, having seen David Martin leave the club to join West Ham.

"He could be a very good signing for the Lions if they can get him for a good price, but it's important that they don't spend too much money on his wages."
