Laurence Bassini has reportedly pulled out of his proposed £1.2 million takeover of Charlton Athletic, which has left many fans of the South London club relieved.

It has been far from plain sailing for the Addicks since East Street Investments completed their takeover of the club in January but it appears their short tenure is near to an end.

Majority shareholder Tahnoon Nimer has been involved in an ugly boardroom dispute with ex-chairman Matt Southall over the last few months and is understood to be keen to sell the club.

It appears Bassini will not be the one to take over, however, as, according to Sky Sports, he has pulled out of a potential takeover deal, citing numerous difficulties with it.

Among those was the involvement of ex-owner Roland Duchatelet, as the Belgian businessman still owns the club's stadium and training ground.

It is understood that Bassini had agreed a £1.2 million deal with Nimer but informed him today he would not be proceeding.

The report claims that there remains as many as four interested parties still in negotiations over a potential takeover.

That includes former Swansea City chairman Huw Jenkins, who revealed earlier this week that he had allowed his 48-hour exclusivity window to complete a deal to expire.
