Jason Knight is one player who could have an eye on a move away from Derby County this summer, with the long term future of the club finally secured under the ownership of David Clowes.

The 21-year-old has been a reliable performer in a variety of midfield roles for the Rams in recent years, and at times has looked like a player with the potential to play above Championship level.

Knight’s versatility will definitely appeal to a lot of managers in the second tier who are hoping to bolster their engine room and tactical flexibility this summer.

FLW’s Derby fan pundit Jason Straw can see Knight’s future going either way this summer.

Speaking to Football League World, Straw said“Jason Knight at Derby County is obviously going to be a hot topic this summer.

“Will he stay? Will Derby cash in on him? Last season I’m not sure we saw the best of Jason Knight in all fairness in the Championship, but we’ve seen enough of him over the last couple of years to know that that is his standard, at least.

“A drop down to League One when he’s got aspirations of the Republic of Ireland squad and continuing his career, I think it is probably a bit too much to ask for Jason to stay.

“He is under contract, so that decision will ultimately fall on Derby County and the hierarchy and the new owner, will Derby cash in on him?

“Derby’s rebuild this summer is massive, it’s already started, I don’t think Derby are going to be throwing millions and millions of pounds around, so will they need those millions of pounds from the sale of Jason Knight? Or would he be more useful in the squad?

“I think ultimately it would depend on what the player wants, if the player wants to leave then fair play to him, if he wants to stay then I don’t see the need to cash in this summer.

“Especially now with the takeover, fingers crossed that holds off the need to sell, so it’d be more of a case of – does he want to stay? Or does he want to go?”
