Paul Lambert’s Ipswich Town side lost 1-0 to Colchester in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday evening, seeing them miss out on top spot in Group I.

League One leaders Ipswich have been in good form this season, sitting in pole position to gain an automatic promotion route to the Championship.

Former Aston Villa boss Lambert has guided the club to ten wins in their opening 15 league games, drawing three and losing on two occasions.

Coupled with good league performances have been some successful EFL Trophy showings, however, a 1-0 defeat to Colchester on Tuesday saw them relinquish top spot in Group I.

Thus far, Lambert has seen the likes of James Norwood and Kayden Jackson play an important part in the club’s success in the league, scoring an impressive 14 goals (seven each) between them – but neither were selected for Tuesday’s game.

Debuts were handed to the likes of teenage duo Liam Gibbs and Tawanda Chirewa, both 16-years-old, in a game that saw both Ipswich and Colchester already qualified for the knockout stages of the competition.

Colchester qualify as group winners after the win on seven points, whilst Ipswich advance one point behind.

2500 travelling Ipswich fans were in attendance at the Colchester Community Stadium to watch their side lose 1-0 and fans of the club have offered their condolences to those that travelled after the defeat.
