It has been a disappointing season for Bristol City in the Championship so far.

The Robins got off to a good start to the season with just two defeats in their opening eight games to put them in and around the play-offs, but a poor run of form since then has left them 18th in the table and just one point clear of the relegation zone.

Nigel Pearson's side are winless in their last five games and will be hoping to return to winning ways against Rotherham United when Championship action resumes following the World Cup break in December.

City were one of the top scorers in the division last season, but were also one of the teams who conceded the most goals. Those defensive issues have been evident again this season, shipping 29 goals already, with only Wigan Athletic, Hull City and Blackpool conceding more.

The problem for Pearson is that his side have not been as prolific of late. Andreas Weimann scored 22 league goals last season but only has four to his name so far, while others such as Antoine Semenyo and Chris Martin have also been below their usual standards.

One of the main positives for City has been the emergence of younger players, in particular Tommy Conway, who is currently their top scorer with nine goals.

With City's form in decline and the club moving ever closer to the bottom three, Pearson may need to make changes in January.

But as well as recruits coming into the club, some of the under-performing players may need to be moved on.

Martin may be one of those who is most likely to leave, according to FLW's Bristol City fan pundit Jack Phillips.

"I would say Chris Martin would be the most likely player to be sold," Jack said.

"I could see him going back to Derby, dropping down a division.

"He just seems a bit out of his depth now in the Championship. He's not really looked a goal threat.

"He's our tallest striker and doesn't exactly command in the air, so I could see him being loaned or sold to Derby in January."

The verdict

There is no doubt that Martin's performance levels have dropped this season.

He managed 12 goals in the league for City last season, but only has one to his name so far this campaign.

Martin is not the only one of the front men to struggle to hit the heights of last term, but at 34, he is not getting any younger and perhaps his best days in the second tier are behind him.

If Derby are interested in bringing him in, a move to Pride Park would make sense.

He scored 76 goals in 225 appearances for the Rams between 2012 and 2020 so would surely be welcomed back.

With James Collins and David McGoldrick already at the club, he would fit the profile of the other strikers in Paul Warne's side and you could see him being a success at League One level.
