Barnsley have joined Sunderland in the race to sign former Burnley striker Tinashe Chakwana, according to respected journalist Alan Nixon.

The 20-year-old attacker is looking for a new club this summer after he was released by Burnley and Barnsley are understood to be one of the clubs considering offering him a deal.

Chakwana did not make a first-team appearance for Burnley, but has been an important player for the academy side at Turf Moor over the past few seasons and his impressive performances have attracted the attention of a number of clubs.

Barnsley head coach Daniel Stendel will be looking to strengthen his squad following their promotion to the Championship last season, while League One giants Sunderland are also thought to be keen on signing the forward.

So, would Chakwana be a good signing for Barnsley? We discuss...

Toby Wilding

"I'm not all that sure about this one.

"Barnsley seem to have plenty of attacking options available as it is at the minute, with the likes of Kieffer Moore, Cauley Woodrow and the recently arrived Mallik Wilks all likely to be reliable features of the Tykes side on their return to the Championship this season.

"I, therefore, can't really see someone with as little experience as Chakwana, getting too many opportunities in Daniel Stendel's starting XI in the coming campaign, with the pressure on them to make sure they do not suffer an immediate relegation back to League One.

"Even so, the fact that this is a free transfer following the attacker's release from Burnley, does mean there isn't at least all that much of a financial risk attached to it."

George Dagless

"He might be worth a look.

"Barnsley could perhaps do with one more striker this summer as they look to keep their Championship status for longer than a season.

"They have some good players but they've also lost some of their best footballers in recent weeks.

"The thing is, though, Chakwana is likely to be a bit of a gamble. He'll want to prove himself but he'll have no experience playing regularly at that level and so there's an element of the unknown there.

"He's a quick-thinking forward in the box, though, so that might give the Tykes something different to what they have."

Ned Holmes

"Bringing in Chakwana would be another addition to the young squad Stendel is building at Oakwell.

"The ex-Barnsley striker had a great scoring record for the Burnley academy sides, having finished as the under-23s’ top scorer in 2017/18 season and the under-18s’ top scorer the previous season, and has been likened in the past to Jermain Defoe.

"Barnsley may be eyeing Chakwana as potential cover for Kieffer Moore, who has been linked with a move away, but this is more likely a move with an eye on future seasons.

"The Tykes have made nine signings already this summer, so adding the forward on a free transfer would be a real bonus."
