For Portsmouth, it has been a season of underachievement in League One as we head into the transfer window and the second half of the campaign.

As play-off semi-finalists last season, it was expected that Pompey would push on this term and take the next logical step into the automatic promotion places, but it has proven to be a challenge.

Pompey currently sit in 10th place in the League One table, just one point off sixth spot.

Despite that, it has been an underwhelming campaign for Kenny Jackett's side, with their away form proving to be the Achilles heel.

Jackett is confident in his side pushing for better things during the second half of the season, and a part of that involves 24-year-old central midfielder Cameron McGeehan, who joined the club this week on a loan deal from Barnsley until May.

Here, we analyse McGeehan's first half of the 2018-19 season at Barnsley and discuss whether the midfielder will be a good fit for Pompey in the months to come...

QUIZ: How much do you remember about Portsmouth's 2012/13 season?

McGeehan is Kenny Jackett's third signing of the transfer window, and joins Steve Seddon and Reeco Hackett-Fairchild on the south coast.

McGeehan won promotion last season from League One with Barnsley, and his experience at the top end of the division shows that Pompey have made a statement of intent by bringing the 24-year-old to the club.

Delving into McGeehan's statistics for Barnsley this term, we see that the 24-year-old is a hard working player in many different ways.

He has been used predominantly in central midfield for the Tykes this season, varying between a more defensively minded role and one further up the pitch.

Despite being considered more of an attacking player, his defensive capabilities are also strong. McGeehan made a total of 91 total ball recoveries for Barnsley, as well as 42 interceptions.

His passing accuracy has also been strong, bordering on a 80% success rate.

It remains to be seen how Kenny Jackett will use McGeehan in his 4-2-3-1 formation. The No.10 role has been a problem position all season for Pompey, but the 24-year-old is also well suited to sitting in front of the back four.

Either way, Pompey have a good player on their hands, and McGeehan will want to repay the faith shown in him by the club.
