Aston Villa target Nick Powell is set to snub their interest and sign a new deal at Wigan Athletic, according to The Sun.

Powell is reportedly keen on staying at Wigan Athletic and he will sign a new contract if a long-running takeover goes through.

The 23-year-old has been on top form for the Latics so far this season, spearheading them to top of the League One table.

His tally of eleven goals in League One has put him towards the top of the scoring chart in the third tier and inevitably attracted interest from teams in higher divisions, including Aston Villa.

Steve Bruce wants to re-sign Powell after working with him at Hull City in the past.

The Villains have already made inquiries for the former England under-21 international but Wigan Athletic have so far rejected any advances, hoping to keep Powell for the promotion run-in.

The former Manchester United striker, however, is keen to extend his stay with Wigan as he looks to work his way back up to the top again.

Powell, who is rated at £900k by transfermarkt, will put pen to paper on a new deal if the Far East consortium complete their takeover of the club from Dave Whelan as expected.

The Verdict

Powell is still very young and now he is finally starting to hit some form and show why Manchester United brought him in from Crewe.

If he spends the rest of the season with Wigan, they will probably win promotion and he will be a Championship player again next year.

The Championship is certainly Powell's level for now as he continues to improve and one day he could potentially be playing Premier League football again.
