Sheffield Wednesday claimed their first victory of the season last night, beating Millwall at Hillsborough in a close encounter.

As we learned from last season, Millwall are not a team to be taken lightly so Sheffield Wednesday fans will be delighted to pick up three points against Neil Harris' men with a 2-1 victory.

Goals from Barry Bannan and Tom Lees gave the Owls some breathing space but they faced a nervous last 18 minutes after Ryan Tunnicliffe pulled one back for the visitors.

Sheffield Wednesday held on and earned a much-needed victory to ease the pressure on the side.

One of the key men on the night was Bannan, who opened the scoring with a delightful finish.

Here, FLW shines a spotlight on his performance in numbers and judges how important he is for Jos Luhukay's men.

Bannan opened the scoring after 16 minutes when a half-cleared cross dropped to him on the edge of the box.

Without a second thought, the Scotsman sent an unstoppable left-footed volley into the net via the underside of the crossbar to hand Sheffield Wednesday the lead.

But although the goal set them on their way, it was the rest of Bannan's performance which was really important for Sheffield Wednesday.

Bannan was a constant threat throughout with his set-pieces and his dangerous free-kick early in the second-half led to them doubling their lead after the ball dropped for Lees to slot past the goalkeeper.

The 28-year-old was instrumental in everything the Owls did through midfield, making 90 passes with a success rate of 79%, which is highly impressive in a tough game.

At the death, Bannan also got back and helped out defensively, making one interception and three clearances.

Both his defensive and attacking contributions cannot be underestimated and Bannan is a vital cog in Sheffield Wednesday's midfield.
