It's certainly been a frustrating few seasons for Wigan Athletic's supporters to endure, with the club's days of playing in the Premier League being a distant memory nowadays.

The Latics are currently playing their football in League One, but are in for an interesting few weeks ahead, as they battle to stay in the third-tier.

The Latics are set to return to action on Monday evening, when they take on play-off chasing Portsmouth at the DW Stadium, in what is certain to be a tricky test.

The club have had their fair share of poor signings over the years, with some forgetful faces coming and going from the DW Stadium.

We take a look at NINE Wigan Athletic signings that flopped over the years, but do you agree with them?

Scotland's spell with Wigan Athletic certainly wasn't memorable, which is why he's the first name on the list.

The forward had impressed with the likes of St Johnstone and Swansea City earlier in his playing career, before going on to sign for the Latics in 2009.

He netted 52 goals in 105 appearances for the Swans, but struggled to replicate that type of form in front of goal with Wigan during the 2009/10 campaign.

Scotland scored just twice in 36 appearances for the Latics, before departing in the summer of 2010. He returned to Scottish football later down the line, before calling time on his career in 2016.

Grant Holt is next up, with the former Norwich City forward signing for Wigan Athletic in 2013 from the Canaries.

The experienced forward had caught the eye with a number of impressive performances for the Canaries, and scored 78 goals in 167 appearances in total.

But it was a similar story to Jason Scotland's, with Holt struggling to replicate that form with the Latics. He scored just twice in 27 appearances for Wigan in total, before departing the DW Stadium on a permanent basis in 2016.

Holt had loan spells with Aston Villa, Huddersfield Town and Wolves whilst with the Latics.

Marlon King is next, with the former Wigan Athletic forward scoring just once in 19 appearances for the Latics.

The striker signed for the club in 2008 after an impressive spell with Watford at Vicarage Road, which lasted three years in total.

The forward couldn't replicate that with Wigan though, and was sent out on loan to Hull City relatively soon into his spell with the Latics, after a slow start to life at the DW Stadium.

A loan spell with Middlesbrough followed that, before King was sacked from his contract with Wigan for off-the-field troubles in October 2019.

Kristofer Hæstad is next on the list, with the former Wigan central midfielder struggling to make a notable impact in his time with the club.

He had previously been a regular with Norwegian side IK Start, before signing for the Latics in 2007, which was in the final year of his contract with IK Start.

But he made just three appearances in total for Wigan Athletic, before briefly returning to Norway. But he left IK Start at the end of his contract with the club.

Hæstad went on to sign for Vålerenga, and spent six years with the Norwegian club, before calling time on his playing days in 2014.

Fitz Hall was a defender that had a considerable amount of experience under his belt before signing for Wigan Athletic in 2006.

He had previously been on the books with Oldham Athletic, Southampton and Crystal Palace prior to his arrival at the DW Stadium.

But he struggled for a consistent run of positive performances with the Latics, and made 28 appearances for them in total. He fell out of favour whilst they were managed by the likes of Steve Bruce and Chris Hutchings.

He left the club 2008, as he went on to sign for QPR, which brought to an end a frustrating spell with Wigan Athletic.

Bogdan signed for the club during the 2016/17 season whilst on loan from Liverpool.

The goalkeeper had previously been on the books with Bolton Wanderers, and impressed between the posts with a number of strong performances for the Trotters, before earning a move to Liverpool.

Bogdan was unable to keep the Latics in the Championship though, as they were relegated from the second-tier after a frustrating league campaign.

The shot-stopper is now playing his football for Hungarian side Ferencvárosi, although he has found regular game time hard to come by with them this season, as he's made just two appearances in all competitions.

Aghahowa is another striker that failed to make a positive impact whilst with Wigan Athletic. The forward signed for the club in 2007, but failed to score a single goal in his 23 appearances.

Aghahowa had a relatively strong goalscoring record whilst with Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk, before going on to sign for the Latics in 2007.

The Nigerian forward had an impressive record for his country as well, but for one reason or another, it simply didn't work out at the DW Stadium.

He left the club in 2008, as he went on to sign for Turkish side Kayserispor. He returned to Shakhtar Donetsk for the final few years of his playing career, before retiring in 2011.

Amaya is next up on the list, with the Spanish centre-back signing for the club from Rayo Vallecano in 2010.

His spell with Wigan was certainly a forgetful one though, with the defender not making a single appearance for the Latics. Amaya signed for Rayo Vallecano on loan whilst with Wigan, and was a regular for them during the 2010/11 season, as they won promotion back into La Liga.

Unsurprisingly, Amaya left Wigan at the end of that season permanently, as he went on to sign for Real Betis in 2011. He then went on to sign for Rayo Vallecano once again in 2014.

Amaya's last spell as a player was with UCAM Murcia, which came to an end in 2019.

Boselli is the last name on the list, with the former Wigan Athletic forward signing for the club back in 2010 from Estudiantes.

He went on to make 15 appearances in total for the Latics, although he struggled for a consistent place in the starting XI in his time with the club, making just five starts.

Boselli found it hard to find the back of the net with Wigan as well, with the Argentine scoring just a single goal for the Latics, which came against Swansea City, before departing in 2013, after a three-year spell at the DW Stadium.

He had three separate loan spells elsewhere whilst with Wigan, and is currently playing his football with Paraguayan side Cerro Porteño.
