Unless a great escape is on the cards like what happened in 2005, then West Bromwich Albion are destined for a Championship return next season.

The club actually made some good signings to try and prolong their top flight stay for more than a season, but it may not be enough to keep them up.

Over the years though, there's been some really bad ones that have failed to make an impact at The Hawthorns - let's look at nine of those who failed to live up to expectations.

The Baggies plucked Zuiverloon from Heerenveen in Holland in the summer of 2008 and hoped he would be their starting right-back for years to come.

He was a regular in his first season but it ended in relegation to the Championship - he featured a lot under Roberto Di Matteo but once Premier League promotion was secured again he couldn't make an impact.

Zuiverloon ended up leaving the country in 2011 following a brief loan spell with Ipswich - clearly not turning out into the classy full-back that WBA had hoped.

Purse was highly coveted during Birmingham's first Premier League season in 2002/03, but after making just nine appearances the season after, West Brom snapped Purse up in 2004.

He made regular appearances under Gary Megson but once Bryan Robson was installed as the new boss in mid-season, Purse's time was up. He was frozen out of the team and joined Cardiff after just one season at The Hawthorns.

Blanco may be a success in the MLS with Portland Timbers, but he was anything but for the Baggies.

The Argentinian signed for West Brom in 2014 and ended up making just three league appearances, leaving a year later for his home country where San Lorenzo picked him up - a really bizarre transfer.

Anelka was one of the world's best strikers in years gone by, but when he tipped up at The Hawthorns he was a shadow of his former self at the age of 33.

The Frenchman played just 12 times for the club and scored twice, and departed after a controversial celebration against West Ham saw him banned for five matches and fined £80,000.

Samaras had been really successful for Celtic, however a move back to England with West Brom failed to be fruitful.

The Greek striker played just five Premier League games - all off the bench - and failed to score, finding himself shipped off on loan to Saudi Arabia for the second half of the season and his contract terminated the following summer.

Zuberbuhler had spent seven years at Basel before being signed by the Baggies in 2006, signed by Bryan Robson but it was curtains when Tony Mowbray arrived.

The Scotsman dropped him almost immediately after he arrived, meaning Zuberbuhler managed just 15 Championship games for West Brom before moving back to Switzerland.

West Brom took a chance on 29-year-old Rosenberg after a good time of things at Werder Bremen in Germany.

The Swede was a free transfer but still ended up being a waste of wages, playing 28 games for the club in just over a year and not even scoring.

He returned to his native country after just a year at The Hawthorns, where he had much better success with Malmo.

Burke broke his own record in 2017 of being the most expensive Scottish player when West Brom saved him from his Leipzig nightmare for a £15 million fee.

The three years he spent in the Midlands brought just 20 league appearances, with loan spells out to Celtic and Alaves as well, and he scored just once in a cup match for the club.

He departed for Sheffield United at the start of this season in a swap deal with Callum Robinson - the Baggies probably got the better end of that deal.

Let's be honest - Lambert peaked at Southampton and he was never the same again after he departed for Liverpool.

His Anfield adventure lasted just a season as he moved to the Baggies in 2015, but scored just once in 19 games in his first campaign.

Lambert lasted just a season before leaving for Cardiff to wind down his career.
