Watford are on course to win promotion straight back to the Premier League, with Xisco Munoz transforming the club since he was appointed.

If the Hornets are to be back in the top-flight next season, it's clear that new additions will be needed to help the club survive and push on.

The success the club enjoyed before relegation, was down to Watford making some shrewd signings, however it's fair to say that they haven't always had a good record in the transfer market, particularly under the current regime.

So, fans may feel that there are many players who could make a list when we look at signings that flopped at Vicarage Road.

Taking into account the fee, as well as the contribution made by the individual, we look at nine signings that didn't work out for Watford...

Having joined the Hornets for around £12.5m in 2016, the Nigerian international arrived with a decent reputation and it was hoped that he would kick-on to become an important player for the club.

That hasn't happened though, with Success managing just two goals in his Watford career, which isn't good enough for an attacking player.

Having struggled for minutes in the past, Munoz has been giving the ex-Granada man a chance in the XI recently, but he hasn't grasped the opportunity. He has time to turn things around, but he has to be considered a signing that has not worked out at all when you take everything into account.

The centre-back has been an incredible signing for West Ham this season, playing an important role as they look to compete for a Champions League finish in the top-flight.

However, Watford fans will struggle to believe it's the same player that they saw in the previous campaign. Dawson arrived from West Brom ahead of last season but he failed to make a positive impression.

He looked sluggish and was often exposed as the Hornets conceded far too many goals and were deservedly relegated. That was his only year at the club, and it was a miserable one at that for the defender.

We go back to 2007 for the next flop on this list, and there won't be many fans who disagree.

Ellington arrived from West Brom for a club-record fee, thought to be around £3.25m, with the expectation that he would try and fire the club to the Premier League.

But, he managed just four goals in 34 games in his first season and managed just one more in 17 more appearances for the club. To cap it all off, he would end up leaving on a free.

Another current player, Gray has to make this list just because he commanded a fee of around £18.5m, which is a significant sum for a club like Watford.

With that in mind, the Hornets would've expected big contributions from the striker, but he hasn't delivered. In total, he has managed just 18 league goals in over 100 outings, which is poor.

From a financial perspective, the ex-Burnley man is about to enter the final 12 months of his deal and Watford would obviously get nowhere near the fee they paid for Gray, and he too could end up leaving for free in a year's time.

Yet another attacking player, the big Belgian joined the Hornets for around £6m in 2015, which is again a decent fee for Watford, and he arrived as a highly-rated player having broken through at Club Brugge.

In the subsequent four years before leaving, Oulare would make three league appearances and move on without having scored a goal. With the target man now struggling to score goals regularly with Standard Liege, it begs the question why Watford signed him in the first place.

It's another deal that the hierarchy no doubt regret, with Oulare not showing anywhere near enough to suggest he could cut it in England.

The Venezuelan was making a name for himself on loan at Granada, a club closely linked to Watford, so when he joined from Udinese, another side that the Championship outfit do lots of business with, it appeared a good addition.

There was a hope that Penaranda would be a real threat in the final third with his pace and unpredictability.

But, he made just three cup appearances for Watford, and is now on loan at CSKA Sofia, which shows how his career has gone, with Penaranda not fulfilling the potential many thought he had.

Unsurprisingly, the winger was another who joined from Udinese, and he is another that appears to be a poor signing.

Having cost £7m, fans may have expected Pussetto to do well, but he made just nine appearances over two seasons before returning to Serie A on loan.

In truth, it's hard to see the Italian making another appearance for the club, particularly if they go up, so this is another addition that won't make a big impact at all.

Having broken through at Birmingham, Watford moved to sign the left-back in 2008 for a fee starting at £750,000. It wasn't a huge fee by any means, but it was a decent sum for a Championship club.

So, Sadler would've been expected to become an important figure at Vicarage Road, but the transfer just didn't work out. Admittedly, injuries didn't help, but nevertheless, the player didn't look up to it when he was out on the pitch.

Having been released, Sadler has gone on to have a good career in the lower leagues for the likes of Walsall and Shrewsbury.

This is slightly harsh on Zarate, as he joined the Hornets and then picked up a serious knee injury, which was obviously really unfortunate.

However, there was a hope that the creative attacking midfielder could bring something different to the team, having played for Lazio, West Ham and Inter Milan among others in his career.

He couldn't make an impact at Watford though, and ultimately he ended up leaving after making just three appearances, which means he warrants a place on this list.
