Middlesbrough are gearing up for a hugely important summer with Neil Warnock ready to make the changes to the squad that he feels are needed to help them challenge for promotion.

Warnock has been frustrated in the last few months as his squad have fallen short of reaching the top-six. There are already rumours starting to circulate around players that they might be targeting in the summer to try and improve key areas within their squad.

As well as incomings, Middlesbrough are likely to be busy in terms of players leaving the club this summer. Some payers are already aware of their fate, while others could emerge on the radars of other clubs. Boro will be hoping they can keep hold of as many of their best players as they possibly can.

With that in mind, we have put together a list of nine potential transfer developments that could emerge at the Riverside this term…

Middlesbrough are going to be in the market to add to their goalkeeping options in the summer transfer window, with Marcus Bettinelli believed by Football League World to be facing an uncertain situation when he returns to Fulham this summer.

Football League World also believes that Warnock’s side could turn their attentions towards Sunderland’s Lee Burge to solve their issues in goal. The keeper was named in League One’s Team of the Season this week and he has enjoyed an impressive campaign keeping 18 clean sheets.

Boro’s hopes of landing Burge could potentially rest upon what happens with Sunderland’s quest to earn promotion to the Championship. Should they fail to go up then, Middlesbrough could potentially capitalise and make a move for him.

Another potential option for Middlesbrough to make a move for in the goalkeeping department this summer is Crystal Palace’s experienced stopper Wayne Hennessey.

Football League World believes that Boro are amongst the Championship clubs taking a close look at the keeper ahead of the summer with him set to be available on a free transfer. Middlesbrough are facing competition from the likes of Nottingham Forest and Preston North End for him if they are going to be able to bring him into the Riverside.

Hennessey would certainly be a useful option for them to have within their squad and Warnock would likely feel he could rely on him to not make any mistakes and be a reliable presence for them.

Should Middlesbrough fail to sign either Burge or Hennessey during the summer transfer window, then another potential option for them to consider could be Oxford United’s Jack Stevens.

Stevens has been linked with a potential move to Middlesbrough already ahead of the summer. Boro are thought to be tracking the keeper following his impressive performances with Oxford so far this campaign. The 23-year-old did sign a new deal with the League One club back in February, so bringing him into the Riverside would not be straight forwards.

However, Boro will be in a strong position to secure the signing of Stevens if Oxford were to miss out on promotion to the Championship this term. He would be a keeper that they could look to build their defence around in the next few years.

One player at Middlesbrough who could be set to attract plenty of interest in the summer window is defender Djed Spence. Boro are therefore going to face a key decision on whether to cash in on him or keep him.

Spence has already been linked with a potential move to the likes of Everton and Newcastle United this summer. A further report from the Northern Echo has suggested that Boro are aware of the mounting interest in the defender and that up to three teams have been watching him recently ahead of making a potential swoop for him.

Warnock has been bullish about Boro’s keenness to keep hold of keep players like Dael Fry and Marcus Tavernier, but he has not been as quick to shut down rumours around Spence’s future. Therefore, Middlesbrough could be tempted to cash in on him to raise funds to strengthen their squad elsewhere.

One other area of the squad that Middlesbrough will be needing to add to in the summer window is upfront, with both Britt Assombalonga and Ashley Fletcher heading for the exit door at the Riverside.

Sunderland’s prolific forward Charlie Wyke is believed by Sky Sports to be on the radar of Middlesbrough and a host of other sides in the Championship. That comes with him set to be out of contract at the Stadium of Light in the summer off the back of an excellent campaign that has seen him fire in 25 league goals this term.

Boro are going to face competition from the likes of Nottingham Forest, Millwall and Cardiff City for his signature, so it is not going to be an easy deal to get over the line. While Lee Johnson has also suggested he wants to keep him at Sunderland if the Black Cats possibly can.

A transfer development that has been bubbling away for a while now concerning Middlesbrough is the potential for them to make a move for Bristol City forward Famara Diedhiou.

Diedhiou was linked with a potential move to the Riverside in the January transfer window with Warnock believed to be an admirer of the striker. However, no move materialised and he remained at Ashton Gate to see out the rest of his contract which expires at the end of the campaign.

It has recently been reported by Football Insider that Middlesbrough are in advanced talks with Diedhiou over bringing him to the club this summer. While a report from Bristol Live has also suggested that there are now other Championship clubs in the mix for him with no decision to be made on his future by the Robins until the season ends.

Another potential option that Middlesbrough could consider ahead of the summer transfer window is Sheffield Wednesday forward Josh Windass.

According to a recent report from Football Insider, Middlesbrough are one of the teams that are potentially interested in making a move for Windass. The attacker has had a decent campaign for the Owls despite their struggles in the English second tier and he has managed to fire in nine league goals for them this term.

A further report from the Sheffield Star has revealed that both Fulham and West Brom are also in the race to sign the attacker. Therefore, bringing him to the Riverside would not be easy and Boro will have to battle for his signature.

Another development that could happen at Middlesbrough this summer is that there could be more speculation surrounding the long-term future of defender Dael Fry.

Fry has been an influential performer for Boro at the heart of their defence all the way through the campaign when he has been fit. It has been reported that Burnley could be set to re-ignite their long-standing interest in him in the summer and look to test Middlesbrough’s resolve with an offer of around £10 million.

However, Warnock has consistently spoken out over his desire to keep hold of Fry and suggested that it would take a lot more than the offers being reported for the club to even consider selling him this summer. Nonetheless, it is still going to be a nervous few months for Middlesbrough over the defender.

The final transfer development that could emerge at Middlesbrough this summer that we are looking at here is that Yannick Bolasie could be offered a deal to remain at the Riverside.

Bolasie has recently spoken out about his potential future and he suggested that he is just concentrating on his performances at the moment and that he will likely have a conversation with Warnock at the end of the campaign.

It could potentially come down to the sort of finances Middlesbrough will have available and whether they feel it is worth offering the attacker a new contract or looking to put their resources into other potential signings.
