Luton Town are going to be facing an important transfer window in the summer where they will have the chance to continue to build on a positive campaign.

Nathan Jones’ side have managed to have a strong season in the Championship and have secured their survival very comfortably and could even now finish inside the top half of the table. The Hatters have performed about as well as they could have hoped considering the options they have in their squad.

There will need to be some key decisions made in the summer by Luton in the transfer market with regards to which players they bring and which ones they allow to leave the club. Getting those right be crucial for their success next term.

With that in mind, we have taken a look at nine potential transfer developments that could emerge at Luton this summer…

One transfer development that could happen at Luton during the summer transfer window is that the Hatters could opt to make a move for Brighton goalkeeper Christian Walton.

The Hatters already have a solid enough number one keeper in the form of Simon Sluga, who they signed for a large amount of money and has had a strong enough campaign this term. However, Luton have still been linked with a potential move for the keeper in the summer, with The Athletic suggesting that Jones’ side could join the list of clubs interested in him.

The Athletic’s report suggests that Brighton will be willing to allow him to leave in the summer after he has failed to establish himself in their side this term, after returning from a few loan spells. Whilst the goalkeeping department might not be the first area Luton have to improve this window, it would still be a signing that makes sense considering Jones has worked with Walton before.

One player who could potentially be set to depart Kenilworth Road this summer is forward James Collins, who is set to his current deal with the Hatters come to an end when the campaign finishes.

Collins has been a very reliable goal scorer for Luton and has played a massive role in helping them get from League Two to the Championship and now establish themselves in the second tier. The forward’s form has already seen him attract reported interest of Derby County and Preston North End ahead of the summer window.

The forward himself has suggested that he would be open to remaining with Luton this summer and would be prepared to potentially sign a new deal. The Hatters surely have to do everything they can to keep hold of the 10-goal striker.

Another payer who could also be set to leave the Hatters in the summer transfer window is influential midfielder Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu, who like Collins is also out of contract at Kenilworth Road in the summer.

Mpanzu has been a magnificent servant for the Hatters and has helped them work their way back into the Championship over the last five seasons. It was reported by Football Insider in January that the likes of Norwich City, Swansea City and West Brom were potentially interested in signing the midfielder but in the end, no move materialised.

The midfielder is likely to still attract plenty of interest in the summer if he is to be available on a free, so Luton are going to have to act fast to secure his potential long-term future by agreeing a new deal. His future is very much up in the air at the moment.

Another transfer development that could happen with Luton this summer is that they could join a list of clubs who are interested in battling it out to land Morecambe forward Carlos Mendes Gomes.

Mendes Gomes has managed to enjoy an impressive campaign with Morecambe in League Two this season. He has emerged as one of the finest talents at that level with 15 goals and four assists to his name in the league. That has seen him attract the attentions of a host of clubs, and Luton are believed by Football League World to be amongst those sides.

The Hatters will find it difficult to secure a move for Medes Gomes this summer, considering the likes of Sunderland, Swansea City, Cardiff City and Barnsley are all believed to be in the mix for his signature. Therefore, Luton might have to be prepared for a real transfer battle.

Luton could also potentially be set for another lengthy transfer battle in the summer with another Championship side in the race to sign talented Motherwell midfielder Allan Campbell.

The Hatters are thought to be interested in making a potential move for the midfielder in the summer, with Jones having been impressed with the tenacious qualities that Campbell possesses. Luton would be prepared to pay the compensation fee required to Motherwell for his services due to his age and the player would favour a move south of the border, according to the Daily Record.

However, Luton will face competition from Millwall for his signature, with the Lions having been keen to sign him in January and prepared to come back in for him in the summer. Therefore, the Hatters might need to act fast to get this one over the line.

A transfer development that concerns the Hatters heading into the summer is what will happen with the long or short-term future of Leicester City loanee Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

Dewsbury-Hall has been an excellent performer for the Hatters so far this campaign and has managed to score two goals and provide six assists in his 37 Championship appearances for Luton so far. Harry Cornick has recently suggested he would be shocked if the club could re-sign the midfielder in the summer and believes he should be playing at a higher level than the second tier.

The 22-year-old’s future is far from certain heading into the summer, Leicester do give chances to their young players so the Foxes might think it is best to keep hold of him. However, he would not be guaranteed a starting role so could potentially be allowed to leave on loan again. The Hatters would surely have to be interested if they were to get the chance to bring him back.

A potential other departure that we could see happen at Kenilworth Road this window is defender Sonny Bradley, who is one of the players set to be out of contract in the summer at Luton.

Jones has already opened up recently about the ongoing situation with the contracts of the likes of Bradley and Collins and suggested that they are players he would like to keep, but that they will have to work within the constraints of the club’s finances to do so.

The defender was linked with a potential move to Preston North End back in the January transfer window, so he will likely have suitors at the end of the campaign if the Hatters can not sort him out with a new contract. It will therefore be interesting to see how his situation develops.

Another player currently entering the final stages of his existing deal with the Hatters is forward Kazenga LuaLua, and he is also facing a very uncertain future in the summer.

Jones has recently spoken about the potential future of LuaLua after a recent win at Wycombe Wanderers where he came off the bench and grabbed himself a goal. He suggested that he does not have to prove to him over his future, but that he is going to have to make some tough decisions over what is best for the future of the Hatters.

Those comments did suggest that LuaLua could well be one of the players that the club allow to leave in the summer so that they can concentrate resources and wages on bringing in other players. The forward should have plenty of suitors at League One, if not even Championship level if he were to leave.

The final transfer development that we will look at in this list concerning Luton, is that George Moncur could also be set to leave Kenilworth Road when his deal comes to an end in the summer.

Like with LuaLua’s situation, Jones has insisted that he has not got anything left that he needs to prove to him in terms of the qualities he can bring to the table. While he also reiterated that hard decisions have to be made over the future of him and other players when the campaign comes to an end.

Moncur could also be one of the players let go at Luton as a result of those comments. He, like LuaLua, should not be short on potential suitors given he has a lot quality that he could offer top-end clubs in the third tier and maybe even one or two in the Championship.
