While their Championship status for next season is still yet to be decided, it is already clear that the summer transfer window will be a big one for Derby County.

The Rams going into the final game of the campaign knowing that defeat to fellow strugglers Sheffield Wednesday at Pride Park will confirm their relegation to League One.

As a result, with that being a long way short of their expectations for this season - even if they do ultimately avoid relegation - it is clear that there will need to be something of an overhaul at the club come the end of the campaign.

With that coming amid the back drop of a prospective new takeover at Derby by Erik Alonso, that is something that could see the club experience a rather eventful transfer market in the next few months.

Here, we've taken a look at nine transfer developments we could see at Derby this summer, once the summer transfer window is open.

We start this list of things we could see at Derby County in the summer transfer window, with the return of Teden Mengi from Manchester United.

Mengi joined Derby on loan from Wayne Rooney's former club back in the January transfer window, and had made a total of nine league appearances for the Rams, before injury forced the 19-year-old to make a premature return to Old Trafford.

Rooney however, has already confirmed that he would like to bring the teenager back to Derby for next season, and his connections with United could help them to do that, although relegation would go against them in that sense, given the Old Trafford club will want him to play at as high a level as possible.

Indeed, regardless whether or not Mengi does return to Pride Park in the summer transfer window, it does seem as though there will be business for Derby to do at centre back in the market.

Of the three centre back's currently on the books at Pride Park, Matt Clarke and George Edmundson are only on loan at the club until the end of this season from Brighton and Rangers respectively, while 36-year-old Curtis Davies, who has missed the past few months through injury, is out of contract this summer.

As a result, it does seem inevitable that Derby will need to sign some centre backs in the summer irrespective of whether they are playing in the Championship or League One.

One defensive departure from Derby that is looking increasingly likely to be confirmed this summer, comes with left-back Scott Malone.

The 30-year-old left Derby on a temporary basis to re-join his former club, the Rams' Championship rivals Millwall, back in the summer transfer window, and he has gone on to become a regular feature for Gary Rowett's side, who are now seemingly keen to keep him long term.

Indeed, Rowett himself has said recently that he believes a deal to bring Malone back to The Den permanently is close, and with the full-back's Derby contract set to expire this summer, it would not be a surprise to see him on the move in the next few months.

It could also be sensible for Derby, to look to get some business done in the goalkeeping department come the end of the season.

As things stand, both of the Rams' current senior goalkeepers - David Marshall and Kelle Roos - are out of contract at the end of this season, and the club may not want to have to bring in two players in that same position this time next year.

With that in mind, it could make sense for Derby to be pre-emptive in securing a new contract for at least one of those two this summer, or, given their performances have not always been the most convincing, you wonder if they might look to bring in another option in that position this summer.

Given the financial implications brought about by the protracted takeover negotiations that have hung over Derby for near enough the entirety of this season, you wonder if the club may need to sell this summer to raise some much-needed funds, particularly if they do suffer relegation.

Should that happen, then two players who could be on their way, are young midfield duo Louie Sibley and Jason Knight, who both saw themselves linked with Premier League Leeds over the past year or so.

Given the Yorkshire club are still in need of some cover in that position, and the frustration that Rooney has expressed with Sibley at times this season, it may not be a huge surprise if those links were to resurface again in the next few months.

It is possible that the aforementioned Teden Mengi will not be the only current loan player Derby will be looking into a fresh move for come the summer transfer window, with Lee Gregory another the club could revisit.

Having joined the Rams on loan from fellow Championship side Stoke on the final day of the winter transfer window the striker scored three goals and provided one assist in 11 league appearances for Rooney's side before his season was ended by injury.

The Derby boss has already admitted that he will not make a decision over whether or not to try and bring the 32-year-old back to Pride Park until the end of the season, meaning this will be another to keep an eye this summer.

One attacking target who Derby could ultimately be left disappointed in their rumoured pursuit of, is Serdar Dursun.

The Rams were reportedly preparing an offer for the Darmstadt striker - who has scored 53 goals in 103 appearances in all competitions for his current club - ahead of the January transfer window, although no move for the 29-year-old would be completed during that market.

Now it seems as though Derby may have missed their chance to secure the services of the striker, with Schalke, who have just been relegated from the Bundesliga, said to have held talks to sign Dursun when his contract expires this summer, meaning the Rams could be about to miss out on his goalscoring abilities.

Even if Derby do miss out on Dursun this summer, it seems that may not be the only transfer battle for a striker they find themselves in when the transfer market reopens, with Accrington Stanley's Dion Charles seemingly of interest.

According to recent reports, the Rams, along with Cardiff and Huddersfield, are interested in signing the 25-year-old, who has also been linked with Championship play-off contenders Brentford and League One champions Hull.

Charles has scored 19 goals for Accrington this season, and is said to be valued at £1.5million, meaning they Derby could find themselves embroiled in a rather intriguing race for his services in the next few months.

Regardless of what happens with those particular individuals, it does seem as though Derby will have to add to their centre forward ranks in the summer.

With Gregory's loan and Martyn Waghorn's contract both set to expiring this summer, that leaves Colin Kazim-Richards - who is the Rams' top scorer this season with eight league goals - as the club's only striker who is contracted to the club for the 2021/22 campaign.

Given the 34-year-old's own contract at Pride Park is also set to come to an end in just over 12 months, it appears that recruiting some more firepower to their squad will be crucial to Derby's chances of recovering in the coming years, from as disappointing a campaign as the one they have just endured.
