Blackburn Rovers have endured a disappointing 2020/21 on the whole.

Tony Mowbray’s side entered the season with aspirations of getting themselves into play-off contention and starting to ruffle the feathers of some of the top-six favourites.

Ultimately, a good start has been wasted and Blackburn have drifted towards lower mid-table.

That hasn’t been good enough to meet expectations of the club’s supporters and a big summer transfer window is now looming at Ewood Park.

Should Mowbray retain the faith of the board, he’s got some big decisions to make, with key players likely moving on. In that eventuality, it’s going to be important those players are replaced.

On the topic of the transfer window and the scenarios it will likely throw up, we run you through NINE here:

We start off in the most obvious place with Blackburn Rovers’ standout player from the last 12 months.

Armstrong has motored past 20 goals this season in the Championship and is one of the division’s most exciting attacking talents.

The 24-year-old has Premier League admirers, with it our understanding that West Ham United and Newcastle United are admirers of the striker.

In truth, it feels unlikely that Blackburn are going to be able to resist offers this summer and a move looks like it will be on the cards.

The task lying at Blackburn’s door is getting good value for money and then a suitable replacement.

One man that we understand is in contention to come in at Blackburn and replace Armstrong is Shankland.

The 25-year-old has been in impressive form for Dundee United over the course of the last two seasons, firing them into the Scottish Premiership.

Shankland has previously been linked with a move into the Championship, but hasn’t been tempted down yet after his heroics for Dundee.

However, Blackburn may well change that this summer as they set their sights on replacing Armstrong and finding someone to come in and replace his glut of goals.

Whether it is Shankland or someone else, Armstrong’s goals would need replacing.

Blackburn swooped to sign Douglas on loan from Leeds United back in the summer transfer window, as the left-back’s chance of senior football at Elland Road started to become slim.

So far this season, Douglas has been a steady presence in the Blackburn side, making 30 appearances.

His loan will expire in the coming weeks and then the 31-year-old will become a free agent.

Blackburn have a decision to make when it comes to Douglas, then, as he could be a shrewd addition on a free transfer given he’s got two Championship winners medals under his belt since 2018.

Harwood-Bellis has been a real success story at Blackburn since arriving at the club on loan from Manchester City.

He's been one of Rovers' best performers during a tough second-half of the season and you can certainly see why the club would be interested in re-signing him in the summer.

That might be tough to do given the centre-back's impressive form and the fact that he looks like he could already be playing at a higher level.

However, you've got to imagine that there will be a strong possibility that Blackburn will ask the question regarding his availability ahead of 2021/22.

Another loanee that's thrived at Ewood Park this summer is Harbey Elliott.

The Liverpool winger has really shown his quality and is approaching 20 goal involvements as we approach the final few weeks of the season.

We are starting to see a player that looks ready for a chance in the Premier League.

That might not come with Liverpool next season, but the Reds could well source him a loan move elsewhere in the Premier League after the success of this stint with Blackburn.

It does look likely that Blackburn will be waving goodbye to him and thanking him for the memories rather than re-signing the winger.

Thomas Kaminski has been Blackburn's go-to goalkeeping option this season in the Championship but he's now approaching the final 12 months of his deal at Ewood Park, which offers a little bit of a saga heading into this summer.

Whilst players will be on the move this summer, Kaminski isn't someone that the Blackburn supporters are going to want to lose and it feels important, then, that the goalkeeper is offered fresh terms and a longer contract.

Blackburn have allowed so many contracts to wind down and they have to learn a lesson when it comes to their first choice goalkeeper.

He needs new terms and he needs them this summer, otherwise Blackburn could well be taught a familiar lesson.

Harry Chapman has had a decent loan spell with Shrewsbury, scoring goals from midfield and giving Blackburn a decision to make in the summer.

He's out of contract at Ewood Park and Blackburn need to decide whether or not he is worth an extension on that deal or if he should be cut loose and able to move onto a fresh challenge.

At 23, it's a big moment in Chapman's career. Blackburn have got to consider that and so does the midfielder.

He needs regular games and, even if a contract offer goes down from Blackburn, he's got to weigh up whether he wants to take it.

It's a saga to keep your eye on, for sure.

Moving onto another saga that Blackburn will have in the summer, we touch on the club's right-back options.

Ryan Nyambe, Joe Rankin-Costello and Elliott Bennett are all out of contract at Ewood Park in the summer and something is going to have to give in terms of securing someone to play at right-back next season.

Whether that's tying one of the above trio down or bringing someone new to the club, it's a position that needs sorting and Blackburn are going to have to do so.

The direction they go in will be interesting to watch unfold and, potentially, very exciting for Blackburn fans.

This is perhaps going to be the most pressing matter for Blackburn in the summer.

Taking into account Bradley Dack's long-term injury problem, there's only Jacob Davenport, Lewis Travis and John Buckley both fit and contracted for the new season.

That is a real concern for Blackburn and they are going to have to either bring some new midfielders into the club or sign up some of the old guard to new terms.

Again, whatever direction the club take, it will be interesting to see unfold.

The midfield is the heartbeat of a side and if Rovers want to be successful, they have to nail their decisions here.
