Barnsley are potentially going to be facing a huge summer transfer window that could even see them preparing for life in the Premier League if they go on to earn promotion.

The Tykes have had an excellent season in the Championship and performed far beyond the expectations of what many would have believed possible for them. Barnsley will enter the play-offs as outsiders to go up, but also with the least amount of pressure on their shoulders of any of other clubs in there.

Whatever happens with Barnsley’s play-off matches, the Tykes will need to be ready to be active in the transfer market so that they can build on their successful season. While they will also need to keep hold of as many of their key players as possible.

With that in mind, we have put taken a look at nine potential transfer developments that might emerge around Oakwell this summer…

One potential transfer development that all Barnsley supporters will be hoping to see happen this summer is for Daryl Dike to return to the club on a permanent basis.

Dike has been a revelation at Oakwell since he arrived on loan in the winter window and Dane Murphy has already confirmed that he will be extending his stay with the club through the play-off games. Barnsley’s CEO has also recently suggested that the Tykes would be able to afford the release clause in the forward’s contract and that re-signing him might be possible even without promotion.

Barnsley are going to have to fend off transfer interest in Dike from a host of other sides though, with the likes of Leeds United, Chelsea, Everton and Manchester United all having been linked with a potential move for him.

Re-signing Dike would be a huge statement of intent by Barnsley and show the club are serious about progressing.

Another potential transfer development that could emerge at Barnsley this summer is that Callum Styles could be sold by the Tykes if they receive a strong enough offer amid interest from Premier League sides.

Styles has been one of Barnsley’s many standout performers this season so far, and he has excelled in the role that Valérien Ismaël has asked him to play down their left-hand side. It is reported by Football League World that the likes of Leeds United, Norwich City and Southampton are interested in making a potential move for the 21-year-old.

Further reports have suggested that Brighton could also be in the hunt to sign Styles and that the Tykes are set to place a valuation on the 21-year-old of around £8 million this summer. They will hope that is enough to keep interested parties at bay.

Barnsley will be on the lookout for more bright and young talented players to add to their squad in the summer, with them having had so much joy from their current recruitment model this term. One player who could be on their radar is Swindon Town’s Scott Twine.

The midfielder has been enjoying an impressive individual season with Swindon, despite them suffering relegation back down to League Two. It has been reported that Barnsley are one of the sides potentially interested in securing a deal for Twine this summer.

Swindon’s relegation might leave them needing to cash in on a player like Twine, and were Barnsley to earn promotion they might be able to beat QPR to his signature, with the Rs having also been linked with a potential move for the midfielder this summer.

Another potential transfer battle that Barnsley could have on their hands this summer is for Morecambe’s impressive forward Carlos Mendes Gomes.

Morecambe have been one of League Two’s surprise packages this season and they have enjoyed an excellent campaign where they have challenged for promotion against the odds. A key part of that has been the form of Mendes Gomes, with the winger having managed to fire in 15 goals in his 42 league appearances. That has seen him attract the attentions of numerous clubs.

It is believed by Football League World that the Tykes are amongst the sides interested in Mendes Gomes this summer, with the likes of Sunderland, Swansea City and Cardiff City all in the frame as well. Promotion for the Tykes would give them a real advantage in getting deals like this over the line. Although there would be question marks over whether he is ready to jump straight to the top-flight.

This is a transfer development that many at Barnsley will be keen to avoid happening, but there is now more than a chance that midfielder Alex Mowatt might be heading for an exit from Oakwell this summer.

Mowatt has once again been a hugely influential figure for Barnsley at the heart of their midfield this season, and he has chipped in with eight goals and seven assists in 43 Championship appearances. Unsurprisingly, the Tykes are keen to try and keep hold of him and look to extend his existing deal which is set to expire in the summer.

However, recently he told Sky Sports that contract talks have been put on hold so that they can focus their full attentions on the battle for promotion. If the Tykes do go up it should give them a better chance of keeping hold of Mowatt, but an exit is still a possibility at this stage.

Were the worst to happen and Barnsley lose Mowatt this summer, then the Tykes will be needing to identify the right sort of option to come in and take his place in the starting line-up next term.

Barnsley have already been linked with a potential cut-price move for Swindon Town’s attacking midfielder Jack Payne, with the Tykes believed to be interested and prepared to offer a six-figure fee to bring him to Oakwell this summer. That comes with his current club valuing him at around £300,000 as he heads into the final year of his existing deal.

The Tykes might need to hold fire on this one if they earn promotion, with Payne probably too big of a risk if they are in the Premier League. However, if they do stay in the Championship then it could well be a signing that works out well as a potential Mowatt replacement.

Another development that happens with Barnsley in the transfer market this summer is that the Tykes could potentially look to re-ignite their interest in Gillingham midfielder Kyle Dempsey.

Barnsley were reported to have been interested in a potential move for Dempsey in the January transfer window and the Tykes were rivaling the likes of Nottingham Forest, Luton Town and Preston for his signature. However, in the end, the midfielder remained with the League One side and has continued to impress in the second half of the campaign.

Dempsey is thought to be still on the radar of Nottingham Forest ahead of the summer window, so Barnsley would have to face a battle for his signature it seems. Again, depending on what division they are playing it could be a signing that is worth their efforts to pull off.

The final potential incoming development that we will look at here involves Barnsley potentially re-igniting their interest in Wigan Athletic’s highly-rated forward Kyle Joseph.

It was reported by The Sun that the Tykes had offers rebuffed by Wigan for Joseph during the January transfer window, as they looked to beat the likes of Tottenham Hotspur to his signature. The latest reports surrounding his future have suggested that Newcastle United have now entered the frame ahead of the summer.

Were Barnsley to get promoted then they could be in a position to rival both Newcastle and Spurs for Joseph in the summer. Having seen the way other young players have developed at Oakwell, the Wigan forward might well be tempted to make the move if a good enough offer is made by the Tykes.

One Barnsley player that might potentially be interested in finding a route out of Oakwell this summer, having not been heavily involved as late, is defender Clarke Oduor.

Oduor has fallen down the pecking order at Barnsley in the second half of the campaign and does not appear to be high up in Ismael’s plans. Therefore, the 21-year-old could well be keen for Barnsley to allow him to leave the club this summer if it is made clear he will not feature next term.

The defender has not featured in the league since a 2-0 loss at Swansea City way back in December, and it does seem unlikely that he would come back into favour next season. So, the time might well be right for him to find a new home at the end of the campaign.
