Over the years, there have been plenty of players who have been signed by Swansea City.

As you would expect to be the case with any club, some of those players have certainly had a bigger impact at the Liberty Stadium than others.

But while certain individuals ranging from Leon Britton to Lee Trundle, and many more, will always be remembered as inspired and lucrative signings that undoubtedly paid off for the Swans, there are plenty of recruits for whom things most certainly did not work out during their time with the side from Wales.

Here, we've decided to take a look at nine of those players who quite simply flopped in emphatic style during their time with Swansea, for one reason or another, and there are likely to be some individual who those of a Swans persuasion may not - or would prefer not to - remember.

But how many of these do you actually recognise?

We start this list with Borja Baston, who Swansea broke their transfer record to sign from Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2016.

However, Baston scored just one league goal in 18 appearances as the Swans were relegated from the Premier League during the Spaniard's debut season at the Liberty Stadium, with the attacker then spending the next two seasons on loan in La Liga.

Baston returned to Swansea at the start of last season, and scored six goals in 19 games before seeing his contract terminated to facilitate a move to Aston Villa last January, only to be released by the Midlands side at the end of the campaign. The 28-year-old is now playing in Spain's second-tier with Leganes.

Swansea reportedly paid £3.5million to sign highly rated defender Franck Tabanou from French side St Etienne in the summer of 2015.

However, Tabanou made just three appearances - all in the cups - for Swansea before being loaned back to St Etienne halfway through his first season at The Liberty Stadium.

Tabanou then spent the whole of the following campaign (2016/17) on loan in Spain with Grenada, who finished that season bottom of La Liga, at which point the defender was released by Swansea, going on t spend the next two seasons back in France with Guingamp, although he has been without a professional club since leaving the French side in 2019.

Emnes had already impressed during two loan spells with Swansea (in 2010 and 2014) before the Welsh club signed the striker on a permanent basis from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2014.

However, Emnes struggled to replicate the sort of form he had previously shown at The Liberty Stadium, making just 19 league appearances and failing to score for the Swans over the next two seasons, before spending the 2016/17 campaign on loan with Blackburn Rovers, where he was unable to prevent the club suffering relegation to League One.

The attacker was then released by Swansea in the summer of 2017, spending a brief spells in Turkey and Canada, although he has been without a club since leaving Vancouver Whitecaps without making an appearance in 2018.

Canas joined Swansea in the summer of 2013 following the expiration of his contract with La Liga side Real Betis, putting pen to paper on a three-year contract at The Liberty Stadium.

However, the midfielder would fail to score a single goal in 35 appearances in all competitions during his debut campaign in Wales, and after failing to impress for the Swans, he returned to Spain, signing for Espanyol, after just a year with the Swans in the summer of 2014.

Having subsequently had spells with PAOK in Greece and Red Star Belgrade in Serbia, Canas is now back in Spain, where he is playing for third-tier Atletico Baleares.

Shechter may have only joined Swansea on loan from Kaiserslauten, but he still failed to really repay the Welsh club's faith in him.

The striker made 20 appearances in all competitions for Swansea, but found the net just once in that time, in a 3-2 win away at Wigan Athletic in the final month of the season.

Perhaps not surprisingly therefore, Swansea decided against moving to Shechter's loan move permanent at the end of the season, and with the exception of a spell in France with Nantes between 2014 and 2015, the striker has spent the rest of his career in his native Israel, where he has won back to back top-flight titles with Maccabi Tel Aviv.

Having joined Swansea from Portuguese giants Benfica in the wake of the Swans' promotion to the Premier League in the summer of 2011, Moreira is another who failed to live up to expectations at The Liberty Stadium.

The goalkeeper made just a single appearance during his time with the Welsh club, which came in a 3-1 defeat to Shrewsbury Town in the second round of that season's League Cup, in which he looked far from convincing.

Moreira then saw his contract with Swansea terminated by mutual consent at the end of his first season with the club, and after a spell in Cyprus, spent the latter stages of his career further down the Portuguese league system, before retiring in 2019 at the age of 37.

Lopez joined Swansea from QPR on a two-year deal in the summer of 2009, a move which saw him link up with his former manager from his time at Loftus Road, in the shape of Paulo Sousa.

However, Lopez failed to make any sort of an impact during his time at The Liberty Stadium, with the midfielder making 20 appearances in all competitions for the Swans, failing to score, establish himself in the side, or make much of an impression.

The Spaniard had his contract terminated by mutual consent six months early in January 2011, and after spells in Holland, Greece, Cyprus and his native Spain, Lopez' professional career came to an end in 2017.

Van der Gun joined Swansea from Utrecht in his native Holland in the summer of 2009, but never really managed to make much of a considerable impact at The Liberty Stadium.

In total, the winger made 35 league appearances for the Welsh club, scoring just three times during that spell, before being released at the end of his contract in the summer of 2011, having failed to really establish himself in the starting lineup, or pose a distinct attacking threat from out wide for the Swans.

Following his departure from Wales, van der Gun returned to Utrecht, spending the next three seasons with the club before his release in the summer of 2014 marked the end of his professional career.

Moras joined Swansea as free agent to provide some much needed defensive cover for the club in October 2011, and made his debut as a late substitute with Swansea 2-1 up at Wolves in a Premier League clash later that same month.

That game ultimately finished 2-2 following a late Wolves equaliser, and Moras failed to make another appearance during his time at The Liberty Stadium, before leaving the club when his short-term contract in Wales expired three months after his arrival.

The defender then spent several years in Italy before returning to his native Greece in 2017, where he is now playing for second-tier side Apollon Larissa.
